Two Weeks with an 8X30 W Habicht (1 Viewer)

@Maljunulo
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Probably one of the few Swaros that I could actually afford and might be interested in getting, besides the 7x42 Habicht. I hope they will still make them if I ever cough up the money to get one.

You might also want to think about the Habicht 10x40. Very similar optics to the 8x30, but with a less problems with veiling glare.

BTW, my main binocular besides the big Canon is still the Habicht 7x42. I like binoculars with low magnification.

Thank you for the thought, Hermann, but my buying days are over.

The Habicht was more a result of curiosity than anything, and only after reading all of the folks extolling its merits. I finally said “Oh, what the hell!” and clicked on “Place Your Order”.

I’m a bit surprised at the results of the “experiment”.

I own the 7x42 Habicht, but until two days ago, had never looked through either the 8x30 or 10x40. I'm also using my 8x32 SF almost exclusively at the moment, having discovered how much more of a joy it is to use in the field without glasses, than with.

Then, on the Monday just gone, I had the opportunity to test all three Habicht’s side by side, comfortably, because I no longer need to use glasses. The 7x42 was more comfortable viewing without glasses, than with, and the view even better than I remembered from the last time I used my own copy. The 10x40's I preferred, a far more immersive experience than the 7x42's, mainly due to having a less tunnel-like view. But the 8x30's? OMG just WOW WOW WOW, what a view!!! I NEED a pair of these! For the view, they are surely the pick of the three and the sweetest in the line, although I'm aware they have a reputation for generating glare under certain conditions. Really, just wow.

@Maljunulo, no wonder you are using yours for five hours a day, every day. I'm amazed you ever put them down. Congratulations!

For me, they are a revelation. I'm in love I'm in love I'm in love I'm in love...

You love sick puppy you, man up and get a pair……..(of 8x30’s) pronto!

My eldest son borrowed mine on long term loan which is sadly turning into a permanent loan as I figured I could live with (just) the superb Nikon E II 8x30.

But lovely though it is, I still hankered for the Habicht so………..Clifton had a mint pair for sale at an excellent price and the fickle ‘buy it now’ finger of fate collided with the keyboard.

DPD will deliver a sibling to the 7x42 and the 10x40 on Tuesday and once again a bemused Rottie will sit on the bank and watch a grey haired old git dunk a pair of bino’s in the river.

Yippee!

Are you going to look before you dunk, or dunk before you look?

Time on reconnaissance is seldom wasted so a careful appreciation of the terrain, the flow of the river and a plentiful supply of treats for my point man, err Rottie, will decide the dunking sequence.

I have no idea how it will go with my new Absam submersible but will report back once the brave members of ‘Operation Dunk the Habicht’ have returned to base for a well earned snifter……and a Bonio for Cpl Archie.😀

Do the scopes get the same treatment? I have to admit, when I read about these binocular baptisms, I can't help but think (especially in light of the recent threads discussing scratched lenses) of particles of things like flint, minute though they might be, borne along in the flow. But we each of us have our own quirks...

Yup, the ATC went a dunkin and passed with flying colours. You are right regarding the particles in the river so I take a 2ltr of bottled water along with me and rinse thoroughly. As for quirks.............................

The Habicht will get the same treatment tomorrow but when my finger slipped when hovering over the buy it now button, a miracle occured and a pair of Trinovid 8x20's were added to the order. They will not be getting a dunkin.

@Ignatius and @Maljunulo

I promised an immediate SITREP on receipt of the Habichts and I do not wish you both to be in the uncomfortable suspended or hovering mode a moment longer.

There will be no dunking. I know how disappointed you are but the bino's, described as mint, are on their way back to Clifton.

The leatherette had come off at some stage, these are 2023 bino's so less than a year old, and I can only think that Stevie Wonder was employed to stick it back on.

But in fairness they didn't skimp on the adhesive which has dried white to provide a real contrast to the matt black leatherette. Lovely job....not.

There is a mark on the top right of the objective lens which I suspect is a flaw in the internal coating. But I may be wrong.

The only saving grace is that the diminutive Leica Trinivod 8x20's are pristine, and rather sweet.

As they are water splash resistant only, they have been spared the ritual dunking.

As Captain Darling said in Blackadder, ' Bugger' .
