Looks like yet another reserve record count of Gadwall - what number do you want me to run with John?

I would say 35 definitely and probably 40...I still had at least 15 in front of the East hide before I went to the Flashes 15 minutes later. I didnt count them again at the Moors after seeing 23 in the morning..I think tbe only way to be sure is to have a synchronised count maybe this Saturday morning.
Snipe I had 46 at Moors am ..late on there were several birds gatnering along the gulley numbering at least 20. Another group appeared at the end of the spit 6 birds . At dark birds were flying out calling from other parts of the Flashes.
Traditionally November is the best month for snipe at the FLASHES where I have recorded 100+ in the past. Without doing a walk through every month as AFJ used to do we will never know how many there are as is the case with Jack snipe. There is no doubt that there are fewer birds at the Flashes due to the encroachment of the reeds, even with the fox fence. The Moors especially around Amys marsh is far more snipe friendly.
Today there were at least 80 birds present on the reserve.

Jack and Common Snipe Comparisons 29.10.19

Some pics from the Moors of the jack Snipe that was found for me by a very observant gentleman who went out of his way to ensure I could see it from my seat. I thank him for that. The bird was on the edge of the water along the depth gauge shore.

By the time this was taken the light was relatively poor and these images were taken from the video.

Clear view of side and top of Jack's head. Compare the pic of the common taken at the Flashes earlier on (pic 4). Also a reasonable comparison of common and Jack in the same pic (1).

Taken on the 29th Oct Time flies!!

Good to see my first Redwing of the season at the Moors today, as well as Song Thrush and a complete quartet of Gold/Green/Bull and Chaffinch. The Kestrel dropping down right in front of the East Hide was nice as was the Peregrine flyby at the Flashes.

Barn Owl and Redshank this evening

Barn Owl showed tonight at about 16.15, stayed around for about 20 minutes before disappearing behind the hedgerow.
Redshank alongside one of the twelve Curlew.

There has been an incincrease in Kestrel sihhtings recently..we had 2 at the north moors during work party. No doubt attracted to what must be a bonanza of voles...pushed into ever decreasing sized patches of dry areas escaping the floods...it would be nice if a Short eared owl would join them.
Bullfinch are certainly down in numbers this year

3 Barn Owls again at the Flashes early morning as per Trevor Jones and Bob Oakley, including an individual with a damaged left eye.

7 Whooper Swans flew over the Moors Pool late morning as per Bob Potter, the first record of the year.

Interestingly a similar sized flock was present earlier in the morning at Enville in SW Staffordshire before flying south.

It was Bobby P who clocked them first. Nice one Bob.:t::t:

From the Moors Pool this morning Dave J reported:

2 Jack Snipe, 46 Snipe, Little Egret, 2 Redpoll, Siskin, Blackcap, Meadow Pipit

really a good morning if not a little chilly, would recommend a pair of wellies if walking around the North Moors, but a walk worth while some brilliant work done there by the volunteers, I have always enjoyed the this part of the reserve but the way they opened up those parts must of been hard work and its all ready proving good for the birds.First four photos from the North Moors.
