Very Impressed by the Curio 7x21 (1 Viewer)

I have never owned a pocket binocular before, but I just bought a used set of Noctivids and was trying to think of a complimentary pair to buy. I bought these because the size would be great for my 10 year old daughter who likes to go in birding hikes with me, and I also do a lot of canoe trips here in Ontario Canada and I am always looking for ways to pack lighter!

I picked up the curio and justified it because I was going to buy the noctivid new but found a good used one and could afford to buy the curio with the money saved (this is how I justified it to my wife anyways lol).

I knew I was going to be happy with the size regardless so I wasn’t expecting much from them.

These things are beautifully made/designed… I got the anthracite ones because I liked the more classic look, they look great. Rubber/metal fusion is nice, eye cups are perfect for me, the focus knob is very smooth.

Ok the most important thing. The IMAGE. Has anyone else looked through these and considered selling their x42’s? I understand they are different weapons for different situations but I am blown away by what I saw through those little things. Image is extremely sharp, great colours, immersive field of view, no major rolling ball effect (if you’re bothered by that, which I happen to be). My brother laughed at the size of the. when I showed him last weekend - he picked them up while raising both pinky fingers like he’s holding a China teacup but when he looked through he said “oh wow!”.

My only gripes are exactly what I have seen posted here, I wish there was a rain guard that could sit on it without being fully folded, and the placement of the strap attachement makes it sit slightly angled against you rather than straight up and down, but those don’t bother me too much, obviously since I am taking the time to write to complete strangers how much I love these.

Anyone looking for a great compact bin, especially to compliment a full size binocular, I recommend trying these babies out !

Sounds like you found yourself a great combination of binoculars! Enjoy them in good health samwise2010 (y)

I use a Leica 10x25 UV and carry it with me everyday of the year and I’m still impressed with the spectacular view it gives me. Pocket binoculars rock.

Now that i think about it, the Curio’s with their 7x magnification would be perfect for on a boat or canoe. Do you think they are tough enough for hiking?

Yes I do, they have already been getting banged around a lot! The 7x keeps the pocket size steadier as well. But you are right part of my enthusiasm may be that I just I’ve never used a pocket binocular, so this post is in praise to great glass in small packages!

Good to hear! If i wouldn’t have the Leica already the Curio would be number one on my bino list :)

Thotmosis,

Bad news from a pocket nerd here. In my experience/opinion the Curio would be an outstanding compliment to your 10x25 UV in all respects, especially given your commitment to carry a bin every day.

samwise,

I think your enthusiasm is down to the fact that the Curio as your first pocket is IMO one of the two best choices currently available for a "one and done" pocket. Your review is spot on.

Hi Mike, Pocket nerd to pocket nerd 😉I have no doubt that the curio is an outstanding binocular but to have two pocket bino’s….don’t you think that’s too much? Will it be complementary or will it make the Leica obsolete? Well I have already two compacts (Leica 8x32 and Habicht 8x30), it’s nice to have choices. So two pockets make sense and the Curio’s with their 7x magnification would be perfect for on a boat or canoe so they will be complementary 😇 Maybe next year, I want a 8x56 and a 7x?

Cheers,
T.

What is the other choice?

Based on my preferences, the other best option for a "one and done" pocket is the Zeiss VP 8x25 but as we know not everyone gets along with it. For me, it works perfectly, like it has an auto pilot system for eye placement, target acquisition, use with or without glasses, IP adjustment, etc.

I was half joking. To be sober and responsible (if only for a moment here), no one "needs" two pocket bins. On the other hand if someone like you happens to have just one, especially either the Curio or a good 10x25, then the other would make a great complimentary bin if desired and it would not necessarily have to be an either or choice to pick one as opposed to the other. Again especially since you will carry a bin on your person at all times, two pockets might make more sense for you than for most people. IMO it would make less sense to have two pockets if one was an 8 and the other a 10. Combining a 7 with a 10, rather than 8 with a 10, covers more ground whether in pockets, or full size.

For context, I should add an important caveat that in addition to travel / leisure / birding I do sometimes need to use binoculars for work as well both onshore and offshore on vessels so that skews me toward a more rather than fewer bins approach. YMMV.

Regards,

Mike

I have heard that the Zeiss has quite a few blackouts due to its short eyepieces...for people who observe without glasses..
this is so?

Pepito,

Yes a number of people do not get along with the VP especially regarding eye relief and blackouts if they do not use with glasses. But many others do not have this problem. So while this issue should be considered, the only way to know whether you will have this problem is to try a pair if you are interested.

I agree, and maybe combining 7x with 12x is even a better combination. For full size that is as i never heard of a good 12x pocket binocular.

As an avid traveler with several homes in different countries for me its convenient to have some binoculars at hand where i go so in my case more is also better . But honestly if i just had one binocular, let’s say a good 10x32 it would be just fine. At the moment I’m in Nepal and i brought my Leica 10x25 and Habicht 8x30, it’s more than enough but it would be better if had brought my Leica Duovid 8-12x42 -instead of the Habicht- along just for the extra reach to look at raptors. But then i would miss the nice and wide crispy 3D view. Really first world problems….

Cheers,
T.

I have read that the optical quality is outstanding but for me -if i understand correct- the dimensions shifts more to a compact like a Leica 8x32 than to a ”true” pocket binocular like a Leica 8x20. Nothing wrong with that though. Wouldn’t mind to own one as it fits perfectly between a pocket and a compact binocular and thus has better eye placement and is more comfortable i guess.

Yes the VP is larger than the UV 25. As you say the VP is between the UV 25 and UV 32 in size.

Thanks for the photo’s. Both are very good looking binoculars. Do you have them both?

Yes. I have a number of other pocket bins as well. I got bit bad by the "pocket bin" Cobra a few years back. Good news is IMO there are reasonably useful and enjoyable pockets in the lower and mid price range.

If we're talking Victory Pocket 8x25 then I don't have an issue and don't wear glasses (other than once a fortnight to read ultra-fine print)... but that might just be me, of course... which is why dealers will let you play, hopefully...

BTW I loved the optical quality of the Leica Ultra-Vid 10x25s, but the apparent field is way too low for me (strangely I can't find it specified anywhere, for me over 60 degrees is great, under 50 degrees no good; then again I have some telescope eyepieces that increase that somewhat...), so I saw it as a bit back to looking down drainpipes (-ish) which is a pain when finding/following things for my use. The Leicas were fun to use though... but not practical at the money...

The Zeiss's were £500 in mid 2018 BTW... probably 2/3 of that was the cost of the humongous case they supply with it, it's only pocket-sized for very large Trolls and Giants unless you buy an aftermarket case... :-(

Hi Jon,

The pocket Ultravids have a nominal AFOV of 52°, see a snapshot from a 2015 catalogue
(since 2016 the catalogues only show the FOV as m/ 1000m and ft/ 1000yd).

Thanks, but I can't see it there, just 5.2 degrees for the actual field? I might need more coffee...
