Those who have not been on the forum for long don't truly understand the full implications of Dennis's embrace of the SE as the world's greatest binocular. I quote here from some of his earliest posts to the forum. These are real, and he posted them in 2005 or 2006, though they are no longer accessible on this website. I copied them several years ago knowing they would come in useful someday. I know, I know. You're welcome.

"I have had Nikon Superior E's...and I can't see how people can say they are better optically than the top line roofs....I think people rationalize keeping their Superior E's because they don't want to spend the money to get top line roofs. Saying they are better optically is crap. They are not...."

"I have 20/20 uncorrected vision and I find it incredible that so many people like the view through the Nikon Superior E's better than top line roofs like Swarovski's, Zeiss or Nikons own roofs. Every current test including Alula using tripods and doublers say the roofs are better. Better View Desired say that Nikon's own roofs are better than the Nikon Superior E's. They are using scientific methods to prove their results. I think you have some vision problems if you think Nikon Superior E's are better than roofs. Or there must be something about the view you prefer but they certainly aren't optically superior. You just don't want to spend the money to get a good pair of roofs. Crack that wallet open and get rid of those antique Porro's! It's only money!"

Jonathon:

You do seem to have quite an opinion on how the SE compares to the latest
roofs.
I also have good vision, no need for binoculars. I have the SE's, and several
top roofs. The Nikon SE's are very good, and the one I think rises to the top
is the 8x32 SE. It is a very good binocular, and compares very well with
any other 8X. You may know when you get in the high end area, it is
up to personal preference, on which you prefer. The SE is there.

Tell us more about how your SE's compare to your roofs? I would like to know more.
As far as BVD goes, most reviews are several years old, but the high ratings
of the Nikon SE are still very sound.

Unless you have taken some time to compare, I don't think you know what
you are talking about. ;)

Well frankly Jerry I don't think you know much and I have found most of your posts worthless. I've done the comparing I need to do to in order to form my opinions. I watch BF mostly for amusement these days and keep to myself.

Oh, and by the way, refer to my post in Dennis's thread about the SE vs EDG II and you will see what I think about the SE. ;)

Jonathan, You are quoting Dennis's old posts here right? Two of them. Or am I crazy?

Now I see these are old quotes. But did you know they still are valid
today?

Jerry,

Sorry for my potty-mouth comment, but it came from frustration. The point of those old quotes from Dennis is simply to illustrate his nuttiness, which we have all come to appreciate. Well, if we don't appreciate it, we do get the Sternlike shock value. Absolutely Dennis does not believe that today. He finally agrees that the SE is at the top of the heap optically.

Jonathon:

I agree with you, I largely ignore Dennis. He finally came around, and
seems to appreciate and has learned from experience.

I thought those were your thoughts, but now I realize that was not the
case.

Trying to keep track of Dennis's opinions on binoculars can cause mental confusion.;)

Tell 'em, Jerry! ( I didn't know you could be nutty.)
In stitches,

I`v not been a member here long, but it took me only a short time to see through Dennis, I`m still convinced this SE love affair is an excuse to ditch the EDG and espouse the virtue`s of an SV or HT.

Jonathan, I agree with your choice of the three award people in post #80.

I guess it helps to have a sense of humor on this forum.;)

Either that or Dennis wanted a porro just to gain "legitimate" entry to the very spirited discussions here on the forum. His "my EDG is better than your porro" was wearing out his welcome pretty quickly on the threads about porros.

Like most regulars if I read read Dennis's posts/"reviews" it's only for the entertainment value, you can't give any credence to his comments about optical performance because he will change his story to suit his latest love or to facilitate a sale on ebay.

Jonathan,

I fully understood what you were getting at above. The irony was palpable.

I can only conclude from dennis' comments that he must have finally developed vision problems himself. ;)

Thanks for posting those old quotes and for the dubious honor. :king:

BROCK... for his rendition of "To All The Bins I Loved Before"....

by far the best post ever. That guy has talent... even though he don't seem to know what he is talking about; or maybe I just don't understand him better than half the time... :t: :t: :t:

There are a lot of BF binocular regulars, but who is the most recognized name?

This person must be universally known to old timers and newbies alike. They must have been on BF for a long time and have a significant number of posts.

Now cast your votes.....

I stumbled on this thread and because I've learned so much in so little time from this Forum I have a suggestion. I (my company) donate a binocular to the winner of this contest and the winner keeps it for 1 year and gives it to the winner of the following year. So, when Newfie Ghost decides who the winner is, the price (a Swarovski SV 10x50, By God Brock if you win this you will never look through a Nikon again, that's my revenge) will be send to that person at the end of December 2012, for her/him to keep it for 2013 and donates it to the next winner.
So Newfie it is up to you to declare a winner each year.

Jan

Jan,

Wow! That's very generous of you. And a 10x50 SV EL, to boot! A dual purpose bin that's also good for stargazing.

I haven't seen Newfie post in quite a while. Seems to have become a "ghost'. You'll have to go by popular vote and set a cut-off date for the contest.

<B>

Brock,

The offer stands.
Let's see if he pups up, otherwise one of the supermoderators makes this a yearly event. Otherwise we call the event for closed for this year and count the nominations in this thread so far. To be frank, I really don't know who will win it then, but it's an option.

It's quite simple. Once the winner is known and we all agree on that, she or he can collect this Swarovski at the store of her/his choice as long as the retailershop is a Swarovski dealer and I will deal with Swarovski from my end so there will never be any sending problems.

Newfie was last on here Nov. 2, 2012 or is that 2 Nov. 2012 ;) Brock couldn't be the winner, he would declare it the best binocular in the world and try to sell it. Oh wait that is someone else on here.

My vote is for Brock!

Jan-

Nicely done! Very ( extremely actually ) generous offer.

In fact it probably will make you the most famous "contributor". :t:
