Warm Hats (1 Viewer)

Hi Ratal

That hat looks interesting, but I can't see any buttons for the earflaps. Do you simply tuck them inside the hat? Also, do you know where I can find out about the sizing; can't see anything on their website. Many thanks.

I tuck the
m up inside as there is no buttons. As for size, xl fits my over sized nogging comfortably. Large is ok, max 59 cm head.

Thanks Ratal, I'll measure my bonce and order one I think! Cheers for the heads-up, as they say :gn: couldn't find a groan emoticon

It is on the website, on the same page as the hat: S = 55cm M= 57cm L= 59cm XL = 61 cm. I read somewhere that the sizes are a bit small, so err on the larger size if in doubt. Those hats do look good.

Ta - clearly, I'm as good at spotting website info as I am at finding birds ;)

As a general comment I prefer hats which either a brim or peak, which is useful when looking into a low sun in winter.
I like "Tilley" hats for all year round wear, keeps out rain and glare, but less good when very cold. I have a Lowe Alpine mountain hat which is very good for cold weather.
I'm probably now of an age when wearing a traditional tweed flat cap my be appropriate.

I discovered that the RSPB sell a waterproof 'woolly hat' today ...... sadly I found even the XXL size was uncomfortably tight! Except when bitterly cold I tend not to wear a hat out birding in the UK. However, in Spain a wide brimmed hat is a must!

Is this one you use? I have been looking at these but I would like to try one on before buying as I have a feeling I might look like a toy soldier in one. You can find them a lot cheaper at some other sites online.

That's the one I've got. Would recommend it, have used it in minus 25 C.
It was warm enough and all I was really doing was standing around.
Granted it looks a bit silly. My girlfriend has banned me from wearing it in her company ;)

In June 2000 I went to Kiev (Ukraine) and bought a Rabbit Fur Shapka as a souvenir. 12 years on this is my Go To winter hat. It is waterproof (though takes a while to dry the outside) and only has one disadvantage namely it is too good! Even in the coldest weather Britain can supply you need to take it off every 15-20 minutes to let your head cool down!
As I am now a bit of a baldie I have tried a number of cold weather hats, even ones that are (allegedly) used by top climbers, and they don't even come close. These Shapka hats are made for winter on the Steppes and even Siberia - so if you want a warm head get one!
P.S. the synthetic fur ones are not up to much, but they keep the anti fur brigades brains cool.
