Does anyone know if you can use a Wildlife Trust membership for Cley Marsh? I know they never used to you still had to join the Norfolk Trust, but on the Trusts reserve sites list Cley is on it so have they changed their stance?

Regards

NO is the answer, they won't accept any other Wildlife Trust membership to access the Marsh. I tried late last year and was given the bum's rush so thought screw you, I just walked the East Bank and then went off to Titchwell.

Thanks Keith. The Norfolk Trust Cley site page has the Wildlife Trusts logo on it too so I guess you could claim false advertising?

There is no reciprocal arrangement between Norfolk and the other Wildlife Trusts; you will face the same issue at Holme, Weeting etc.

So I guess it begs the questions why are they on the list and why do they carry the Trusts logo. Very misleading for anyone buying a membership to be told they can't get onto a reserve that is listed.
Are there any other reserves outside of Norfolk that do not honour the membership?

Friend of mine questioned this practise and got an email back from the Norfolk Trust saying that 'they had to charge to be able to have such a nice visitor centre where you can buy over priced buns and fizzy water' okay I paraphrased it slightly. There is an equally nice cafe at Potteric Carr where you can get buns and fizzy water but the YWT don't charge other Trusts members to access the site. Methinks Norfolk are a little up their own jacksey

They are on the list as Norfolk is affilleated (for want of a better term) to the Wildlife Trust; if you look at the accounts for any county trust they all pay into the central trust. Norfolk - presumably due to the amount of money they rake in from the likes of Cley and Holme - then choose not the honour the reciprocal arrangements with other associated trusts (although that doesnt stop NWT members thinking they can access other reserves for free based on my experiences). The main Wildlife Trust website does state that you can access some reserves for free but pay for others (albeit towards the bottom of the page): http://www.wildlifetrusts.org/reserves-wildlife/our-nature-reserves

I'm glad that Titchwell is RSPB or that would be a closed shop too.

Thanks for that Phil I missed that bit ;) They should highlight the list to make it clearer as to which reserves are free. If you lived in Norfolk and joined without seeing the small print you would be p###ed off being turned away from all the reserves :-C
