The dangerous thing about tripe like this is that some people will believe it, and call for a cull or something. They're still very thin on the ground in terms of population density in most of their range here, like you'd have to go out of your way or get lucky to see one in Cork.

Fairly unlikely that they are Viking marauders migrating South from Norway, though: much more likely to have spread West from the UK.

Co. Clare ireland here. Just heard my first woodpecker on the land here in a small stand of pines. Rapid-fire 5 taps repeated every 5 or7 seconds. Great to hear.

It was spreading from the east and last year had made it to the east of the county some 40 miles away. The stand of pines is 45 years and some had snapped in a storm so I left them in the expectation that some day the woodpeckers would find them. I'm on cloud nine!
