Yorkshire Birding (30 Viewers)

9th May AM- Wolds northwest of Driffield, 1 quail calling, 1 cuckoo, 6 fox cubs + vixen playing outside the den.

9th May PM - South Cliffe, 1 cuckoo, 1 pair Turtle Dove

Cetti's singing again at Potteric this morning - some more tickable views but no chance of a shot. Not too bothered as for me the song is the best thing about this bird.

My only Yorkshire tick so far this year, to go with my one lifer - Common Yellowthroat.

Guys, what's the best thing to do regarding feeding the garden birds at this time of year? I get great pleasure from watching the birds in my garden and now have a tick list of well over 30 species of garden visitors. I feed them daily throughout the autumn and winter months, but is there any rule of thumb about spring and summer feeding?
Thanks.
Tom

Cream-crown Marsh Harrier briefly over the reserve at Pugney's this morning; it left towards Horbury at 10.25. Local guys were telling me a couple of week ago it was a 'much-wanted' for the year list, so don't know if it's a blogger or I'd dropped on?
Two 1st S Little Gulls still present from the 5 yesterday. Once again, there is a chance this is old news!

We are coming to North Yorkshire (East Witton) for a few days this week and I was where to go for some bird photography. Bearing in mind that I’m bringing the wife who is a non birder non photographer where would be the best place to go.
Any suggestions gratefully received.

Ron

All round East witton you will find walks that take you go down to the river where you may come across dippers, and grey herons ,kingfishers ,if you go up to the moors you may see red Legged Partridge ,red grouse, pheasant, soaring buzzards cerlew and oyster catchers..Jervaulx Abbey is not far and there are tea rooms there too as well as walks that take you to the river.I have just come back from Harmby which is just up the road.If you are going by car Nosterfield's just down the road or you could visit Foxglove Covert which is based in the army barracks at Catterick .It is a bird reserve for the army but you pull up at the gates and ask to see it and they will let you in give you a pass and tell you how to get to it .there i have seen deer ,grey wagtails ,all the normal birds like chaffinches, willow tits ,just dont go at weekends as they are usually netting as they do ringing there .You could vist Royal Studley that is near Ripon as the have three diffrent kinds of Deer and its also the home of Foutains Abbey.Hope this may give you a few ideas.Good luck.

Thanks 666taz for all the info. I will try some of them and if I get any decent shots I will post them here.

Came across at least 2 different Long-tailed Tit families today - well over 20 birds in total! Little bit later than other years. Plenty of Yellowhammers, Linnets, Willow Warblers, but no Turtle Doves, a Red Kite drifted over the car park, full story on the blog: www.eybirdwatching.blogspot.com

Does anyone know if the smew is still at pugneys? Went for a very quick look on the main lake but didn't gave time for a full walk. Any help much appreciated!

Cycling home through Gipton at approx 17:10 I saw a large dark bird being sent packing by a crow. Unable to stop due to traffic or keep looking at it it seemed to be kite sized but very dark, rather slimmer winged and didn't appear to have a forked tail (looked too square). It may well have been a red kite but just looked wrong for one.
