Yorkshire Birding (32 Viewers)

Surf scoter with common scoters yesterday. Then went for a walk at Hayburn Wyke after being driven out of Scarborough by the crowds, apparently it was armed forces day.

Turned out to be a stroke of luck as this got me my second lifer of the day by way of a Slow worm!

Evening at Wykeham to try for nightjars was unsuccesful. Niether were there any raptors or turtle doves but there was a tripit at the view point.

We tried Wykeham on Wednesday, nothing we could 100% call as Honey Buzzard but great views of Common Buzzard and at least 2 Goshawk acting like soaring Honies.

Surf Scoter still present today with Common Scoters. They were well out in the bay, way too distant for photos.

Barn Owl showing well at Filey Dams perched out in the open and another showing well from our holiday cottage in Bessingby this evening.

Bempton Cliffs much the same as usual with some great views of the usual selection. Bonxie reported on Saturday on Bridlington Beach and seen yesterday from Bempton. Peregrine perched on cliffs as well yesterday.

Still pretty gutted about the smurf floater. Even more so when I learnt of the circumstances of Sunday's cancelled trip. Made do with a revenge trip oop north for summat else yesterday

I've repeated here a post from The Hobby Thread, as it's locally pertinent.

Falconfest
I took a walk along the Dearne Valley near Cudworth, Barnsley this afternoon and stopped to see if there might be anything in the air. There was.
In fact two Hobbies were hawking amongst the Swifts above the breeze-blown branches of the birches along the ridge.

Insects were their prey, and three Kestrels joined them - until the Hobbies decided to attack their rivals: a spectacular dog fight ensued and lasted for a minute or two.

Next a hapless Buzzard was harried by both Hobby & Kestrel, tipping its wings to avoid its tormentors. Now the Hobbies were fired up & some attempts at Swifts followed, but, despite some superb flying and stunning speed, the prey eluded them.

At least three Kestrels were in the air, and all the falcons remained across the valley, so I took a wander over that way.

Of course, by then, the Hobbies had departed, though the Kestrels continued to follow the hay-making tractor.

The sun brought out butterflies, including a Ringlet, and a Small skipper, Reed warblers sang and a Green woodpecker yaffled across the river.

Out in the Dearne Valley this morning.

Highlights were a family of Lesser whitethroats and a Kingfisher along the river.
Plenty of Banded demoiselles and Ringlets were in the air, too.

No sign of Hobbies today though.

Fantastic views of Barn owls and a Little owl last night & this morning a Marbled white !! I didn't even know they occurred here!

Anyone in Leeds seen two large dark raptors this evening? Approx 5:20pm
While cycling home through Crossgates I saw two large birds (buzzard sized) following the ring road south. They were almost black looking, broad winged, small headed and long tailed. Unfortunately I couldn't stop to get a decent look but they weren't all that high up and were doing the typical flap, flap glide that birds of prey do. With bins on a quieter stretch of road I'd have had a better chance of ID'ing them.

Its not Leeds but had large ,dark juvenile Peregrine over Poppleton this pm,about 2.30. Circled extremely high and headed west.

These were not like the usual kites or buzzards I see often, though similar sized. Certainly not peregrines, it was the almost black colouring that had me wondering what they were. Shame I couldn't stop and I was close to veering into the lane on my outside so had to pay more attention to that to stay safe.

Normally I'd be driving through Crossgates at that time but tonight I was stuck in Ponte till 5.25 so was well late getting there. I have seen a dark morph buzzard around North Leeds earlier in the year, very dark bird but it was only a singleton.

I'm guessing after Kite and Buzzard, the next most likely largish, dark raptor in the area would be Marsh Harrier.
