Yorkshire Birding (22 Viewers)

Strange thing this weekend at a small lake I regularly go to, on Friday morning I counted at least 20 newly hatched (Mallard I think)ducklings darting around but no mother duck to be seen, by Sunday afternoon the numbers were down and I found a couple dead by the waters edge. There are also two tufted ducks with 12 ducklings between them.

Were the Purple Hairstreaks in the Oaks near to where the SEO's were viewed from?

Yes Tim,along the 'dog turd' lane as I have christened it.Some smallish oaks along there, nice sunny evening, nailed on.But up in canopy, its just patience to find one that has settled.

Cheers

Scarborough Area Visit

Hi,

I'm visiting Scarborough at the weekend, primarily to see the mighty Status Quo at the outdoor theatre and would much appreciate a few tips on decent birding sites. I've got most of Saturday to get out and about, with the use of a car. Only place I've heard of is Wykeham forest raptor watchpoint and Filey.

Cheers,

Richard.

R.S.P.B Bempton Cliffs are only a short trip up the coast from Scarborough, about 4 miles near Bridlington, largest inland colony of Gannets in GB amongst other things, hope this helps.......Damian

Night Heron

Had good scope views of the elusive Night Heron on Wednesday, at Old Moor reserve a lifer for me, just arrived at the right time slot showed at around 20:00 for five minutes, sat in snags of a bare tree no less, then a couple of brief flights later it was gone, into the reeds not to be seen again that evening.

Mark.

If you go to Filey don't forget Filey Dams, nice little reserve with good birds. Reached from a road called Wharfedale on the left as you drive in from the Scarborough - Bridlington road. Follow Wharfedale round to the left and you will see the car park after a couple of hundred yards or so.

Yes a good little site, had pectoral sandpiper and turtle dove when I was there last September.

Quick visit to old moor this aft, a bit quiet, just packing up and wood sandpiper dropped in right in front of wader scrape with 2 green sands. Very good views and 1st time I've seen the 2 together to compare them properly.

old moor, on the wader scrape, i had one wood sand, in flight disappeared over past he mere hide, one green and one common.
plenty of common terns about too.
i've just noticed the night heron is showing on the map again, has it been seen again today then

Thanks for that. I popped in on Saturday afternoon. Seems I was a bit late in the day for Ruff and Avocet which had visited a.m. Nice little reserve.

Flamborough Head was interesting too, ideal for my pal who's new to birding, with plenty auks etc. Couple of Arctic Skua up to their usual tricks.

Cheers, Richard.

Cracking day at Blacktoft yesterday. 50 species including 10 waders. Brilliant views of bittern, young marsh harriers everywhere, there were 3 on the ground at ousefleet. Over 60 blackwit, 15+ spotted redshank, wood sandpiper, loads of ruff and green sandpiper, plenty of snipe, dunlin, avocet, redshank and few lrp. Saw quite a few bearded tit, 8 little egret
and a grasshopper warbler. Would added more to my list if i'd looked at hedgerows more. Dint see a swan though!

I forgot to add Barn Owl carrying prey. How can you forget that?!!

Forgot Greenshank as well, 51.
