Yorkshire Birding (44 Viewers)

We were at Blacktoft on Sunday, John. We were told the Monty had been coming back to the reserve to roost each evening - we didn't see it during the day, nor a marsh harrier. Great views of water rail & greenshank were the highlight. Waders not in huge numbers.

Hi Sandra, quick question if I may, is it a male or female Monty.

regards

Mick.

Looks like no Easterly winds for a while :(

Hatfield Moors look interesting as a place to visit. Any chance of seeing Adder at this time of year?

A steady few hours down at Swilly this morning gave Ken and I decent views of hobby, spot redshank and barwits. 5+ kestrel in the air over the dragline was also something you don't see too often.

Them'll be Blackwit Keith. Nice? fem type Garganey and a solitary Ruff. And for those that know of my running joke, 4 species of raptor including a Marsh Harrier that soared out of sight

Any chance the Kestrels are of the pair that nested in the dragline this time (and have done for a couple of year)...?

Had a quick look at the pond(nr Wetherby)-which still has a "bird sanctuary" sign on the gate.Nothing exciting, apart from a family of Great Crested Grebe. The lake appears to have acquired some fishing platforms, and may well have been stocked because the cormorants were having a field day!
Autumn is definitely on the way-there big groups of swallows and house martins, and I haven't seen a swift for ages.

I always thought Woodlarks were found in the South-East and South-West. Are they spreading Northwards?

Skipwith Common is a beautiful place. Just looked on flickr.com.

Larks can be found at Skipwith.
Nightjars are found at Hatfield, indeed they have guided walks to see nightjars in the appropriate season.

I have never read wind direction on a weather map before so I assume this means from Tuesday and onwards there will be North-easterly winds and for at least 4-5 days?

The arrow points from the direction the wind is coming from. The number is the speed. Long term forecast keeps changing so keep checking, but looks like an eastern bias next week.

I cycled to Skipwith in June especially for the larks but I only heard one sing partially and could I hell see it. Had to make do with tree pipits and the usual stuff.

Thanks! I will hope to go down on Wednesday. I wont be able to do Thursday, Friday due to work. Tuesday, Saturday, Sunday are an option also. Prefer the weekend because less traffic. Which days would be better for the birds next week?
