Yorkshire Birding (18 Viewers)

May be heading up for black grouse in the next few days, anyone know any reliable raven spots nearby without leaving Yorkshire?

Leucistic Thrush

Leucistic thrush near Strid Wood today. It was in one of the fields to the east side of the Barden Bridge to Storriths road at the Barden Bridge end. It was in amongst a largish flock of Fieldfares which also contained the odd Redwing and a Mistle Thrush. From the size and shape I would say that it was probably a Fieldfare but it could have been a Mistle Thrush. IIRC the bird which hung around for a while at the beginning of the year was ID'd as a Mistle Thrush, so could conceivably be the same bird.

An adult and two juvenile were seen in Greater Manchester. Don't know if they were females or males. Will be going up finally on Thursday. Family trip to the Rotherham area and hope to get a few hours in but no sign of them on bird guides.

Never mind, I suspect there will be quite a few scattered around northern England for an extended period until they start leaving for Scandinavia during late March to early May (though unfortunately I think its likely some on grouse moors will get killed by gamekeepers. See link below; p.18-20 is referring precisely to the area we are discussing). I haven't been following the situation away from Sheffield closely I'm afraid so not sure how the Manchester birds tie-in.

That much ? I will be on my own so don't know if I will risk it now. There is always old Moor, Potteric and Throne/Hatfield.

The path up to the shooting cabin is fine, I was there the same day that Carl took this pic .. Didn't have any ravens but a hen harrier was a very welcome sight.

Did not manage to get up there. Saw an accident today on the m1 missed it by seconds. Felt unnerved and shocked. I hope whoever was involved is OK.

Happy new year to you all. Went for the little bittern today but it was keeping its head down in the gale force wind, unlike all of us. Gave up and went to Tophill Low. Was very happy to see the velvet scoter.

Good to see you Owen. What did you decide to do in the end?

Bridlington diver

Juv Red throated diver from Bridlington harbour on New years day, not my first bird as I was lucky enough to see the Little Bustard at Fraisthorpe, a little shy for photographs, great start to the year, Happy New Year to all Yorkshire birders.

I have just joined ,I moved a few months back to Headingly and now see a lot more birds in the garden here than I ever saw when we lived nr Haworth but I don't know what some of them are,I know the usual assorted Sparrows ,Blackbirds ,Blue tits etc. and the distinctive more unusual ones ,The Red Kites and Woodpeckers etc,but there's a lot of Brown birds of all sizes in the garden I cant identify and wondered if its ok to post photos for help from members to identify them
