Genus: Paradoxornis
Description
This genus contains 18 parrotbills from Asia. They share:
- A very deep bill, greater in depth than in length
- Nostrils completely covered by bristles
- Mostly brown, grey and rufous plumage with some black marking
- Sexes are alike
There are several morphological groups which are sometimes split into different genera (see taxonomy).
Taxonomy
Paradoxornis is a genus in the Family Sylviidae.
It has formerly been placed in its own family, Paradoxornithidae.
The genus is sometimes split into:
- Hemirhynchus
- Psittiparus
- Paradoxornis (including three species: Black-breasted Parrotbill; Spot-breasted Parrotbill and Reed Parrotbill)
- Chleuasicus
- Sinosuthora
- Suthora
- Neosuthora
