Xiphorhynchus lachrymosus

Identification

21·5–25 cm (8½-10 in)

  • Black head throat and mantle with much buff streaking
  • Rest of body chestnut-brown
  • Longish de-curved bill
  • Long broad tail

Sexes similar.

Distribution

Central America: Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama
South America: Colombia, Ecuador

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 3 subspecies[1]:

  • X. l. lachrymosus:
  • X. l. eximius:
  • X. l. alarum:
  • Tropical northern Colombia (Sinú, Cauca and Magdalena valleys)

Habitat

Lowland, mangrove and secondary humid forests observed at heights around 823 m (2,700 ft) elevation.

Behaviour

Diet

Their main diet consists of arthropods, with the addition of vertebrates. They accompany army ant swarms.
