Identification

18 cm (7 in)

  • Blackish head
  • Greenish-olive wash over cheeks and forehead
  • Olive-green mantle

Distribution

South-east Asia: found in Indochina, Malaysia, Borneo, Indonesia, Greater Sundas, Brunei and Indonesia.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 2 subspecies[1]:

  • P. n. inexspectatus:
  • P. n. nieuwenhuisii:
  • Known from a 1901 specimen from north-eastern Borneo

Habitat

Very little is known. One bird in Sumatra was seen at at 700 m in low shrubbery on a river island.

Behaviour

Diet

Again little detail. Seen foraging with both Black and White Bulbul and Black-headed Bulbul
