Identification
- Grey brown
- Lower breast and belly streaked black
- Black barred undertail

- Dark eyeline
- Dark crown
Male: black and white streaks in upper breast
Female: rufous and white streaks
Distribution
Endemic to Australia: found in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Victoria.
Taxonomy
Subspecies[1]
There are 3 subspecies:
- C. p. melanotus:
- North-eastern Queensland (southern Cape York Peninsula)
- C. p. picumnus:
- Central and eastern Queensland to central Victoria and eastern South Australia
- C. p. victoriae:
- South-eastern South Australia (south-eastern Queensland through eastern New South Wales to south-western Victoria)
Habitat
Drier open forest and woodland clearings, riverine woodland.
Behaviour
Diet
The diet includes ants, insects, invertebrates, some nectar and sap.
Breeding
Both sexes build the nest in a tree hollow from grasses. The female incubates the eggs.
