Rare and Scarce in Yorkshire (1 Viewer)

There appears to be a Fudge Duck on Castle Howard Lake (via rbm) - anyone know anything about it? Do you have to enter the grounds to view the lake and, if so, how much is it?

It's on the great lake which is free to walk round and there is a car park at the north end.

Yes, Ferruginous Duck showing nicely this afternoon.

Just out of interest, can anyone think of a decent reason why this will presumably glide effortlessly through the committees as a wild bird, whilst the rb goose wont?

Not to say I don't think this is a wild bird, I do, but we were having this conversation on site (others disagreed with me), and I can't see why most ducks get such an easy ride, whilst with geese, the automatic response is fencehopper?

It depends on the circumstances. If the R-bG had been seen to fly in off the sea with brents at Wells or even Spurn for that matter, whilst the Fudge was on Roundhay Park lake letting you stroke it and feed it Mother's Pride, the positions would be reversed.

One factor; geese will struggle if they turn up away from traditional sites. Ducks don't really have the same traditional site loyalty.

I do see your argument, whilst not fully agreeing. A party of four Ring-necked Ducks arriving at Saltholme would be regarded initially as the genuine article and it would be up to them to let themselves down, whereas the four Snow Geese behave exactly how you would want them to but are guilty from the start.

And i'm nt sure I see the difference btw a R-bg sitting on a rockpool on the NE coast and one flying in over Wells?

Or that Castle Howard is that much more of a rare magnet than Roundhay Park (although it clearly has a decent track record)

What's the story behind the Upland?

Non birders don't dream up such birds, and birders would report even a possible ASAP that day???

That one puzzled me too Steve. Saw it on birdguides last night when I got home. Marked R, rather than the usual !!! Hard to imagine the confusion spp

I don't think I ever tried to give anyone the impression I was some kind of expert, far from it, I am rather much a beginner, and as such I am prone to the odd mistake every now and again.
Obviously I called it wrong over the R-B Goose and have corrected my list accordingly.
I started contributing to these forums and joining in on the trips because I though I would be able to learn a lot by mixing with better birders like yourselves. I have learned something.
It seems that I have unintentially ruffled some feathers so to speak, and can only think it is because of what I said about the aforementioned goose as it is the only time I have been involved in a serious thread. For that I am truely sorry. It wont happen again and I bow to your superior knowlege.
Unless I bump into you in some hide somewhere I very much doubt any of you will hear from me again. Don't bother replying I won't be looking. Once again sorry.
Im not angry just a little saddened to have experienced what I have when I think of all the people I helped find Turtle Doves etc this year. Once again sorry but I got it wrong and I'm a big enough guy to admit it.

I think the outlaw is taking things a bit too personally, his last post seems a bit of an over reaction to me, but then again he's not gonna read this so it doesn't matter.

As for the Red breasted Goose I think some of you may be better taking a look at my blog and going to Hornsea for your Goose fix, surely better credentials.

Maybe of interest or maybe not but I know of a collection just up the A64 from Malton with large numbers of Red breasted Geese, maybe 40 of them! and loads of other stuff like Bufflehead and Hooded Merg. It's a private collection I just happened to do some work there a few years ago.

Met rovin' a couple of times at the meets now and it seems most out of character. I wonder if he was miffed because we lost him during the last meet. Pity.

Never met him but it did not seem in keeping with his usual postings.Although I do not input a lot on the forum I feel it is sad to see people quit like this, lets hope he has a rethink.

Keeping records of non tickable birds is still useful for Birdtrack. At the end of the day it is a hobby and people shouldn't fall out over it.
