Mallorca 2016 (1 Viewer)

Some more breeding news. It seems that Osprey are expanding their numbers with 15 nests and a minimum of 15 young, all good news this year. I was delighted to see that the Island of Cabrera has three nests with a total of 5 young. Many other raptors have increased too and I will post the figures when I get them. Mike

Good News Indeed.

Just to give an update on the Mallorca "Bigyear" during these quiet times.
Only one birder has managed to see over 200 species, quite difficult here. Spring was not particularly good for the normal variety of birds. Unlike last year, there were hardly any Red-footed Falcons which is a shame, few birds are better than a stunning male Red-foot.
We are hoping for a more productive autumn migration when we can all add to our totals.
Some migration is already underway with a few Alpine Swift being seen. Things hot up at the end of the month and September and October are usually very good.
Waders can be good in August and I am going to the salt pans tomorrow and hoping to get lucky. Mike

Mike kept quiet about his own placement in the Mallorca list - I think a very creditable 6th place with 175 species seen.
Good luck with the last quarter year.
Martin

Thank you Martin. I am only a few behind and I need some fairly easy ones so I may end up in the top five for a change. That's the plan anyway! Hope to see you here in September. Mike

A flaming hot walk down Eddie's track at the salt pans. It was worth it to see an Oystercatcher, a new bird for this year. Common in the UK but pretty scarce here. Also about 160 Flamingoes and 3 Ruff. Mike

Hi Mike
Just booked my flights (ouch!) but it means that I will be there (in s'Albufera) from 13 September, leaving on 4 October. I can hardly wait!
May your run of new birds continue.
Best wishes
Martin

A Golden Oriole reported from my local park here in Mondrago a few days ago. I have seen three Orioles there over the years, strangely all of them in August. Mike

Sorry about the quality of the photo but can anyone help with this snake, found in a friend's garden recently. I have looked through all Mallorca records but I am still not sure. Thanks, Mike

I went to the salt pans at Colonia Sant Jordi at 3.30 pm and saw a distant gull which I believed was a first calendar year Slender-billed gull. It has just been confirmed thanks to some fine photos by Juanjo. Mike

The first day of the "Big South", watching migration at the most southerly point, began today. Not a bad start with three Black Kite.
Resident Booted Eagles, Marsh Harriers, Kestrels and an Osprey were also seen.
I will post here all sightings, Mike

Hi Mike
Difficult to be certain from the photo but I'd think Viperine.
Martin

Many thanks Martin, you could well be right but I couldn't be certain from the poor quality photo. I attach another one which may be a bit clearer. My friend has a video so I will watch it next time I see him. Mike

Mallorca sightings

Hi Mike
Hope you can help...I'm staying near Cala D'Or for 2 weeks starting next Monday and I want to keep on top of bird sightings when I'm there. What's the best day to day online resource to keep in touch with what's around ?
Thanks, Andy

Hi Andy. I post all the news I get on here if you have access.
I am on the local bird news which sends messages via my mobile so I would be happy to text you once you are here. PM your details if you want me to but if not I will make sure the news goes on here as and when I get it. Have a great time and do let us know what you see. I am next door to Cala d'Or so if you want to meet up to go and see the Nightjars or migration at the Cap just let me know. Mike

A Broad-billed Sandpiper was identified this morning at Salobrar de Campos by Maties. I dashed off to see it and was lucky enough to get there in time, a real mega for Mallorca. Mike (with huge apologies to my wife whom I abandoned in the middle of nowhere.)
