Scotland is the northernmost part of the United Kingdom, covering approximately 40'000 km². It's a country of varied landscapes: 10'800km of mostly rocky coastline, mountain ranges, moorland, lowland vales and hills.

Over 450 species of birds have been recorded in Scotland and about 175 species regularly breed. Some of the interesting breeding species are White-tailed Eagle, Golden Eagle, Osprey, Crested Tit, Scottish Crossbill, Parrot Crossbill, Red Grouse, Western Capercaillie, Black Grouse and some species of Waders.
Many species migrate through Scotland, particularly Waders and Waterfowl. Fair Isle, Shetland and the Orkneys are famous for rarities.

The Locations in this category are divided into seven subcategories:

• South
  • The southern part of mainland Scotland, consisting of the densely populated belt from Glasgow to Edinburgh, Lothian, Scottish Borders, Dumfries and Galloway, Ayrshire, South Lanarkshire and the Isle of Arran.
• Central
  • The part of the mainland north of the South to a line north from Inverness to about Kyle of Lochalsh. It includes Moray, Aberdeenshire (and Aberdeen), Angus, Perth and Kinross, the northern parts of Stirling, the southern part of Highlands and Argyll and Bute (without the islands)
• North
  • This region consists of the northern parts of Highland (without islands)
• Inner Hebrides
  • The inner isles from Islay up to Skye
• Outer Hebrides
  • The islands west of the Minch: Harris and Lewis, North Uist, South Uist and Barra
• Orkney Islands
  • The Orkney Islands
• Shetland
  • The Shetland Islands including Fair Isle
