    How to attract bluejays

Whee, thread necromancy! :-O I can't say how healthy it is for them, but we never could keep them out of our dog food bowls.

Rescued unknown bird in Myrtle Beach SC

Yikes, those look like some nasty injuries on the poor thing! Have you been able to get in touch with a vet or wildlife rehabilitator to find out what to do about them? Based on the photo and the leg ring, it looks like a pigeon. NPA = National Pigeon Association, and they have instructions on...

    Hurricane Irene Birds

I'm a bit frustrated! The park near me is very small and I'm not near any rivers, so I'm not hopeful for any interesting sightings there, and the subway isn't expected to be up and running until late tomorrow at the earliest. Maybe it'll come up before sundown so I can grab a ride to Central...

    Snowy or Little Egret?

If you're sure it's not a boat tailed grackle I'd encourage you to report it to eBird or a similar project. I see reports of great tailed grackles as far east as PA, but if a grackle can make it to PA why not a bit further? With such dramatic climate changes affecting birds it's important...

    Snowy or Little Egret?

I can't find a report of a little egret ever being seen in Brooklyn... not that there isn't ever a first time but plain old odds favor the snowy. You also have a nice shot of a rear angle of the head, and the lack of head plume points again to snowy. Littles lack the yellow leg striping present...

ID Help: Various locations Western USA

Nice picture of the yellow-rumped warbler, they're so dissimilar to the ones here I wouldn't have guessed it!

Downy or Hairy Woodpecker (New York State)

Thanks for the explanation. :) There's such variation in other field marks that I was hoping that one was at least a constant... oh well!

Downy or Hairy Woodpecker (New York State)

I'm curious as to why you say not always? My field guides mention this as a distinct field mark for downy woodpeckers.

How is your 2011 List Going?

Embarrassingly small compared to most people here, but I'm glad to have got up to 60+ birds. :D I'm planning on going on one of the Audubon Society's eco-cruises in the next couple of weeks, so I'm hoping to add a lot more of the birds I don't typically see.

Looks like prothonotary warbler? NY, USA

It definitely had no chest streaking so I'm assuming it wasn't a yellow warbler, although the wings being a dull/darker yellow instead of gray is possible since I saw it in the shade. It still seemed very bright yellow, much brighter than yellow warblers, though. It may also be that it just...

Looks like prothonotary warbler? NY, USA

Today in Central Park I saw a VERY bright yellow bird that I believe was some kind of warbler. I wasn't able to observe it for very long, the only field marks I was able to make a mental note of were the plain yellow head, chest, and belly and gray wings. I watched it as it flew off and it land...

What was your best bird today!

It was on Monday rather than today, but of the new birds I saw the northern waterthrush was my favorite. The constant tail bobbing was very cute!

Has Pale Male Become a Dad Again

The weather's been pretty unpleasant the past couple of days, and it wasn't that nice today but it at least wasn't raining so I headed over to try to see the nest from the park. I figured there would be more people trying to see the chicks, but I just saw one guy (in a rather heavy coat since it...

They appear to be, but the closest leg is just in a shadow. Looks like most of the bird facing the camera is in a shadow, actually.

Has Pale Male Become a Dad Again

How wonderful if it's true! I'll have to take a trip to the park tomorrow to see if I can catch a glimpse myself.

    Predatory bird - Utah, USA

Wow, I've never heard of kestrels taking up residence in a garage before. Animal control should be able to tell you what to do, I'd give them a call before trying to encourage it to leave any more (other than leaving the door open of course). It may be little and have little claws, but they're...

    Predatory bird - Utah, USA

Looks like an American Kestrel, nice spotting! Based on the pictures here I'd suppose it's a juvenile: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Kestrel
