Birding videos I have recently posted some videos on Vimeo of birds seen this week in Cheshire and the Wirral: Green-winged Teal at Neumann's Flash: https://vimeo.com/151048671 Pallas's Warbler at Hewsall: https://vimeo.com/151003433 Long-eared Owl at Burton Mere...

Wonder if this was same as "Turtle Dove" reported at Neumann's recently? Actually seems more likely than that reported given the state of TDs in the UK currently.

John - you should have headed north to Bowness on Solway mate - there's been loads past there recently along with Long-tails, Arctics and Bonxies.

Here's a handy hint ... try something called a "telescope". There's plenty on the market nowadays.

Not been reported today, at least by any of the regular patchers

Yeah, I've also seen them in the Far East. Worth noting that when I saw our mystery pipit yesterday morning it was feeding with Mipits and was obviously bigger and bulkier.

The photos Doc has posted on the Focalpoint website show a much darker looking bird than it appeared in the field (and as Doc has mentioned light plays an interesting part in these things). Interesting, Pod / McShifty's photos on his blog seem to me to be more 'life-like' if that's a fair...

Got some good views this afternoon. In my view warm brown rump and no obvious patterning on upperparts, along with big white super, wing bars and outer tail feathers suggest its a Water.

Cheshire And Wirral Birding: Hills, Lowland and Coast

Having failed to find any Spring migrants at Marbury, spent most of the morning at Richmond Bank. Found 1 1st winter Iceland Gull, 3 Yellow-legged Gulls (2 adults + 1 3rd year) and a 1st w hybrid Glauc x Herring Gull before everything was flushed off the bank by an impressive tidal bore. On to...

Up to 6 Yellow-legged Gulls at Richmond Bank during a 4 hour stint today, but nearest to a white winged gull was a hybrid first winter Glaucous x Herring Gull. Gulls were very mobile thanks to the presence of lots of Grey Herons, presumably displaced from frozen pools at Moore.

Have you been to Red Rocks? Not much in the way of resident birdlife there. "Passage" can refer to local as well as national movements and I'm sure Jane has a pretty good view of what is and isn't passing through.

Has anyone nailed whether this is a Kumlien's Gull or just a very pale 1st yr Herring Gull? My photos are inconclusive but based on what I saw I tend to agree with Jason and think it's just a very odd HG.

No, but it looked like same as was seen on the tip last Sat

Cheshire And Wirral Birding: Hills, Lowland and Coast

Thanks Jason. Your photo looks like a good fit - first impressions are always a good guide and initially it looked like a Herring Gull but with an almost perfect Kumlein's outer wing pattern. I ended up thinking possible Kumlein's given that I would have expected such a bleached primary wing...

Cheshire And Wirral Birding: Hills, Lowland and Coast

Just returned from a late morning session at Richmond Bank, where a 3rd/4th year Caspian Gull present, 2 adult Iceland Gulls plus a possible first or second year Kumlien's Gull. I have posted photos on the gallery with link below. Unfortunately none show the bill or legs, which in both cases...

Tundra Bean Goose was on Neumann's Flash first thing this morning with a few Pinkfeet and its host flock of Greylags. Chance it could roost again tonight so an early start tomorrow might pay off. It had flown off by 6.45 but it clearly hanging around in the area.
