Stunning set, Alan (I adore that last Yellowhammer)! Was admiring these on the blog earlier, don't think I commented then (was supposed to be working at the time o:D), loved your lapwing piece -- very stylized feel to it.

Paint them, paint them, paint them. These need colour!

Completely gobsmacked here. The shorebird winging by in #863 is a fantastic composition as it is, just begging to be painted! Brilliant all around.

Congrats on the lifer -- a superb visual record of the occassion you've put together here, too!

Brilliant, brilliant. How do you manage to see forms so clearly? Never any hesitation in your work. I've admired your hobby photos over at the blog as well, some phenomenal shots (particularly the first one hawking the dragonfly, wow!)

There it is -- proof that you do indeed have a settling in period, and don't just sit yourself down and casually lay out one of those sure, steady, bang-on sketches on the spot! Splendid observation here.

Always a treat, Alan! And an insightful explanation of your methods as well. I haven't had a lifer in awhile, so thanks for letting me live vicariously through your phenomenal work!

Oh perfect, as mentioned, superb job on the water. Love the heavy texture of those big paint gobs, too! He looks so very alone out there.

Brill, and that wigeon and egret sketch is just waiting to be done up in paints. Always worth the wait!

I'm always just so completely blown away by your sketches -- what can I say? I was attempting to sketch kinglets myself over the weekend, always end up nothing like the real thing, but you always manage to capture them just as they are. Seriously, they must sit and pose for you -- how does one...

Oh, wish we had GCGs! Such lovely shapes they fold into, our common Red-necked counterparts don't have heads quite that interesting. Delightful.

Big blocky head patterns, mmm! There's always so much expression to the eyes of your birds, too. I've thought of your sketches many a time while pencilling in the dark little eyes of songbirds -- I'm apt to give them all the same round, beady look, which doesn't do much for adding character.

Mmmmm, love the grebes! And the ruff, wow, what a sketch. Lots of updates for us, sir!

Spectacular drawings, Alan. Makes me think of Van Dusen, in that there's never a mark put down without purpose! All this spring activity, and I've hardly poked my nose outdoors the past two weeks (after a long winter of moaning and griping!) -- tomorrow morning, for sure, for sure...

Brilliant, always and ever brilliant work! Yes, must echo Tim here. Someone may have to sabotage that camera for awhile...

Mmm, nothing like immy little gulls! Give the boy a rap so that he'll stop repeating himself, and get this painted up quick!

Just caught your latest thread on Surfbirds, Alan -- great to have another look at these. (I'm still blown away by those Redpolls, wish I could be half so sure with a pencil as you are with a pen!)

Wow - what a bird! I'm quite envious, and of those drawings too -- fantastic work.

I really, really like this. Very loose, I love the water. I hope to see you try this method again some time -- great success!

Brilliant. Great job getting the shadows on the Shrike. And that Nuthatch is excellent -- loose and absolutely spot on.

Awesome, just amazing work. Wish I had the confidence to use pen - it's difficult not having that eraser to fall back on when everything goes horribly, horribly wrong!
