Leipzig Birding (1 Viewer)

Hi, I'm in Leipzig for a few days for work (June 4th-11th). I would really appreciate any suggestions for good birding locations in the area. I do not have transportation so I am ideally hoping for locations within walking or easy public transportation from the city centre. Or perhaps a short train ride away for the weekend.

Also, if any local birders were interested in meeting up that would be a fun option too. I am hoping to have my mornings free to look for birds, and some of the weekend too.

best regards
Mark

Hi Mark,

I don't know the region myself, but as there is not much info available in english, I try at least to give you some links in German that I could find.

A google map with interesting areas in Sachsen: http://maps.google.de/maps/ms?hl=de...666992&spn=2.065284,3.295898&z=7&source=embed
Details on these areas: http://www.vso-web.de/vso-regional/voegel-beobachten-in-sachsen.html
Google map with interestin areas in Sachsen-Anhalt (not too far from Leipzig): http://www.osa-internet.de/gebiete.htm
And the contact of a local birders organisation: http://www.ov-leipzig.info/adresse.phtml

If you are interested in specific species, it might be worthwhile to register to ornitho.de, something like the german ebird. You need to register, and then go to database queries, where you can display observations for the past 2 weeks for specific species or just all species. For selecting locations, you need to narrow it down for the federal state (SN for Sachsen, ST for Sachen-Anhalt) and then click the districts (e.g. Leipzig) you are interested in.

Best, Florian

I just checked ornitho.de. Not too many active birders (it is Germany after all...)

In district (Kreis) Leipzig there is the possibility of Crane, Wryneck, Great Reed-Warbler, Penduline Tit, Icterine Warbler and Red-backed Shrike a trainride away between Großdeuben and Böhlen. Might be worth a shot!

Crested Lark occurs on the edge of Leipzig, but birding industrial estates is not optimal fun. Even Barred Warbler is not too far away (Zwenckauer See), but that looks challenging to get to without transport. I also would have no idea how to visit that area, as the maps are uninformative (it's an open-cast mine).

Hi,
I have just checked ornitho.de. For an area south of Leipzig in Markkleeberg (12°21'57.72" E / 51°14'59.06" N) called Neue Harth Gaschwitz they reported yesterday Common cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) , wryneck (Jynx torquilla) and Corn Bunting (Miliaria or Emberiza calandra) . Not too bad for someone looking for birds of the continent.
As Xenospiza mentioned “…it is Germany after all...” public transport from Leipzig to Markleeberg is not a problem
Cheers
Johannes
