Sunday I went back to Road R with an entomologist, and we looked at all the interesting native plants again, particularly trying to puzzle out the cyrtandras. He caught a lot of native flies along the way, particularly around rotting clermontia branches, and it was interesting to learn about all of them.
Despite wonderful weather I don't recall if I heard a single 'apapane all day! Typical 10 minute bird counts were 4-5 Japanese white-eye, 2 'oma'o, 2 'elepaio, 1 northern cardinal. The 'io were still near the cyanea enclosure. Individuals of Japanese bush-warbler, hwamei and red-billed leiothrix in the tropical ash plantation area.
