What is the amazing bird in second picture ? Is it some kind of parrot or what. I think they must be the clearest pictures I have ever seen of Snow Buntings, hardly going to get away with mixing them up with anything else again thanks to Derek.

hi dolce, this is a photo of a parrot i took in florida

Fabulous pictures........... I was a bit stunned to see Minks in cages for sale in the local small pet shop in Mallorca. (dont think it was a Mink I saw few months back). They are quite scary and wild looking close up too though really beautiful. Here is just a squirrel in my daughters garden in England, I have seen a few in my garden here though first time managed to photograph one.

A few pics from today......now 168 with snow bunting.
It's getting very close! With Enda on 169 it looks like a two horse race for 2008 top county lister.
I assume at this stage (with the petrels, shearwaters, skuas and autumn migrants gone), all the "usual" birds have been ticked so it's down to rarities now??? So 172 or 173 will probably be the new individual county record.
Peter, what's the county year list at now - with the lads at near 170, it must be up on 175?

I think its...

173 Barnacle Goose

There were Little Stint in September and Snow Bunting in spring....

I think the commonest bird we are missing is Black Redstart.

Unless I have forgotten one?

2 Wheatear at Cruisetown the best today.

I think the only 'national rarities' we have had so far (this year)are

Ring necked Duck
Long billed Dowitcher
Forsters Tern
Canada Goose

Great shots one and all.

Just in case anyone keeps records of these things I saw a huge flock of about 1500 -2000+ crows at dusk on Sunday over Drumcah lake, i dont know where they ended up roosting though.

I stand to be corrected - and probably will be! As far as I know Enda has not seen 6 birds recordered in the county in 2008 - including Little Auk (Hugh Delaney-4/9/08-off Dunany), Barnacle (Maurice Conaghy-13/10/08-Baltray), GW Egret (Gerry O'Neill-2/7/08-Lurgangreen), Goosander(Margaret-21/2/08-Salterstown) and Canada Goose (Don Hodgers-5/10/08-Hermitage). That would leave the total at 175.
PS I hope I don't appear to be taking away from Enda's achievement - far from it - the fact that all he has missed are these one-off, short staying sightings is a remarkable achievement. And I know I would not have over 150 if it wasn't for his (and others) findings in the first place. Thanks lads (and lassies).

By the way Peter, well done on your WC Sparrow in Cape.

Black Redstart

There was a Black Redstart at Cruisetown this morning about half way down the strand on the rocks opposite the turn with the row of bungalows and sheds. I could not relocate it when walking back up the strand.
Ruddy Duck and at least 4 Gadwall at Keenans Cross Pond.
I checked back and it was on 1st December that you had one at Cruisetown, so none in 2008.

Hen Harriers
Barry O'Donoghue of the NPWS is running a survey on Hen Harriers, so can people please pass on their sightings to him at [email protected] or send them on to me and I will forward them.
If anyone cares to check out winter roosts, Saturday 1st November is the next watch date, sites would need to be watched from 5pm until about 6.30pm depending on the light.

One was seen on a few occasions at Baltray beach this year and they were seen regularly at Cruisetown last year.

There has been ongoing discussions regarding the number of (1 or 2) hen harriers in the Cruisetown/Salterstown area. Two weeks ago there was one at Cruisetown at the same time that Frankie had one at Salterstown, indicating, as some of us believed, that there were in fact 2 birds.
Last Saturday 2 HH's were seen at the same time at Cruisetown. I also had a single bird that afternoon in Salterstown.
I have also seen a single bird (Breffni also reported one) at Ballagan in the past few weeks.

Thanks Derek,

I am not sure if I have missed any species reported on the forum.Maybe some species have been seen and not reported here.

Got a very credible report fo a GS woodpecker visiting a feeder in Dromin area - apparently they have video so I'm hoping ot check it out later today or tomorrow.
