Nikon EDG availability? (1 Viewer)

What review?
Pete didn't mention CA, edge-to-edge sharpness, or the presence or absence of any other aberrations. And I really don't care who paid the bar bill.

John

I long ago gave up reading Pete Dunne on the subject of optics. It's too irritating.

The 7x42 EDG I tested was also a specimen from the Guatemala marketing junket. The results are here: http://birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=116087

It's disappointing to see a lot of respected free-lance birders slowly being converted into spokespeople or "pro staff" for optical companies.

Does it skew his view? I don't know? I don't care? He's an amusing (and skilled) writer and has pretty good birding background. Seems like as good as anyone else. I read several reviews from several people and take some sort of weighted mean of the result (given other stuff of theirs I've read).

Don't you do that too? Or do you just dismiss the write up of anyone who's sold out (to Leica? Business in general?) "trashing" the Nikon (wait he didn't do that ... he like the bin).

As regards the "detailed" review. I've lost faith in those. If you aren't using measurable parameters then it's an "in my opinion review". And each opinion can be weighed as you see fit.

If nothing else throwing the bins 100 feet into dirt is an interesting test that you won't see too many other places.

They'll be after FrankD next ... taking him on interesting junkets to West Viginia to review the 32mm ED Promasters. It's a small marketing budget after all. ;)

there you go sancho, always living on the edge. :t:

LOL! That's me, Stuart...not one to be constrained by Petit-Bourgeois Conformity. Hell, I might even go do the family shopping now...at night, in the 24-hour Tesco's! (I tremble with anticipation even thinking about it...)

I notice that the American Birding Association´s online store has a pair of Nikon EDG 8x42 in stock, at 1,900 USD (A bit pricey compared to the prices quoted in the UK...where it isn´t actually available yet). But how did it get there?:-O

There is an entry on a German forum stating that the EDGs are NOT going into production.
The author is quoting an unnamed source at Nikon and seems credible. Apart from the few hundred delivered to US dealers he says there will be no more.
There is some speculation on the forum for the reasons; some suggest production difficulties (as with the new Swaro ELs?) or the financial crisis and Nikon's concentration on the mass market and apparent disinterest in premium products.

I noticed in the latest birdwatching magazine nikon have taken out a new advert advertising there current premier binoculars and there estimable qualities. I suppose it could be true, time will tell.

It is just an unsubstantiated claim by an individual boldly claiming to know things nobody else knows or has heard about.
Others have challenged him, and the poster was unable or unwilling or both to come up with the haziest trace of evidence.

I have met a shepherd dog yesterday (I cannot reveal his name, of course) who told me that the little green men from outer space have bought up the whole production of EDGs. The dog seems credible.....

I am also a member of that forum and I agree with you. It is a rumour and the poster has absolutely no credibility.

cheers

Strange, nevertheless, that after a European press release (with illustration) in March they are no longer mentioned on the European website or 2009 catalogue.

Nikon Sport Optics.com still has the EDG

http://www.nikonsportoptics.com/group.php?group=15&subgroup=155

But who can fathom the Nikon web sites? Nikon Sport Optics.com still has the SE and E2 too ;)

NikonUSA.com site still has the EDG

http://ns2.nikonusa.com/template.php?cat=4&grp=15&productNr=7560

http://ns2.nikonusa.com/template.php?goingto=wb_search2&cmbCategory=4&cmbGroup=15

So it's not dead yet in the USA ... unless they forgot to tell the web guys

EDIT: with that I look at the LX L 8x20 and find ... the specs have bugs

http://www.nikonsportoptics.com/product.php?group=15&subgroup=155&product=7506

FOV=5.4 degrees? And 356 feet @ 1000 yards. Should be 6.7.

Seems like the 10x FOV crept in there.

So you never can tell.

Yes, very bad PR indeed.

well: other mothers have pretty daugthers, too: :gh: (do you speak Austrian?)

Mine is the ugly sister (SLC) but she's a good gal all the same.

Never considered S-uzie, L-isa and C-laire ugly ;)
and what's more: they are not hiding like the new japanese beauty who seems to be a truly shy creature, afraid to come out of the closet.

Who likes to date a phantom?
