Because we actually like depth of field (guess the bird based on its 1mm deep cross section)

What review?
Pete didn't mention CA, edge-to-edge sharpness, or the presence or absence of any other aberrations. And I really don't care who paid the bar bill.

I long ago gave up reading Pete Dunne on the subject of optics. It's too irritating.
It's disappointing to see a lot of respected free-lance birders slowly being converted into spokespeople or "pro staff" for optical companies.
I had a nice reply from a Nikon chap in Yourp saying that the EDG ought to be available from February 2009. I also found this site giving full specifications for same: http://www.nikonhunting.com/binoculars-edg-8x42.html
(Sorry Mods if I´m not supposed to post that....delete it and chastise me as you will...)
there you go sancho, always living on the edge. :t:
I noticed in the latest birdwatching magazine nikon have taken out a new advert advertising there current premier binoculars and there estimable qualities. I suppose it could be true, time will tell. There is an entry on a German forum stating that the EDGs are NOT going into production.
The author is quoting an unnamed source at Nikon and seems credible. Apart from the few hundred delivered to US dealers he says there will be no more.
There is some speculation on the forum for the reasons; some suggest production difficulties (as with the new Swaro ELs?) or the financial crisis and Nikon's concentration on the mass market and apparent disinterest in premium products.

It is just an unsubstantiated claim by an individual boldly claiming to know things nobody else knows or has heard about.
Others have challenged him, and the poster was unable or unwilling or both to come up with the haziest trace of evidence.
I have met a shepard dog yesterday (I cannot reveal his name, of course) who told me that the little green men from outer space have bought up the whole production of EDGs. The dog seems credible.....

Strange, nevertheless, that after a European press release (with illustration) in March they are no longer mentioned on the European website or 2009 catalogue.
I am also a member of that forum and I agree with you. It is a rumour and the poster has absolutely no credibility.
cheers
