Young Birder (112 Viewers)

Hi all,

Just thought I'd announce that I've been 'elected' as the new administrator of the Young Birders Blog on blogspot.com. I'm aware this blog hasn't had much attention from its members recently so I am going to try and update a few things and come up with a few ideas to make it better. Clicking on the link at the end of this post and viewing the blog, what would you say is needed to make the blog more exciting? I was maybe thinking a photography competition? If you have any ideas, I would love to hear them. I have already added a blog list to the blog, which I've basically made and A-Z of Young Birder Blogs.

For all those that are members of the blog that visit Birdforum and are taking part in the yearlist competition, is it possible that you can please email me your current list standing and add your highlight birds since you last updated to: [email protected]. Thank you very much if you can do that guys, its just that the yearlist competition is seriously out of date right now. If anyone on here has not joined and would like to visit the site/join, please click on the link below. It is a fantastic site with many participating young birders, but a bit more participation is needed to keep the blog alive, just like the young birders thread, so please, if you've had a nice day's birding, copy and paste from your own blog and make your very own entry on the young birders blog. Thank you very much folks!

Got my target species sorted for Norfolk, which is the most likely option for this week.

I also hope to see the following Rarities down there:
Savi's Warbler~ one en route
Red Footed Falcon
Red Backed Shrike
Whiskered Tern
White Spotted Bluethroat

There has been a Black Stork local to date so hopefully going looking for that tomorrow

Pied Flycatcher
Wood Warbler
Redstart

plus maybe a few passage waders, other unexpected seabirds and perhaps make a few stops on the way up to add to my species total.

Hi there you should get all your target birds .Nightingale can be very difficult at this time of year most have stopped singing.Best time to try and see them is when they have just arrived.

I have started a new thread for this but can I suggest a young birders field day trip on the 26th June. By this time most exams are over. If it is a success, we can run further trips and maybe take a holiday to Scilly or Norfolk or wherever in October.
Ideas for the location welcome. It needs to be somewhere accessible by public transport and accessible for as many people as possible.

Change of plan, we are going to Suffolk Bye Bye Montagu's HArrier :(

... hello Purple Heron B :) ! Have a great trip :t:

I know I'm barely a 'young birder' any more, but thought I'd post something on the young birder's blog anyway to get it going. Sorry there aren't any photos (I don't have a camera!), but I've put in a link to someone else's blog where there are photos of the 3 birds in question...

Indeed, Purple Heron is maybe going to become a possible target for me, as I will be visiting Minsmere, and maybe Bluethroat if it decideds to stick around at Welney. Don't want to be over-ambitious though. My targets are much the same to birding maniac, with the additions of Honey Buzzard, Stone Curlew, and a few bogey birds which are relatively common down there but you just don't get here (e.g Little Owl, Avocet, Nightjar, possibly Willow Tit and Red-crested Pochard) as well as Bearded Tit and Reed Warbler, which I've seen before. I hope you have a great time birding maniac; Andrew Kinghorn and creamcolouredcourser I believe are also going to be down that way this week, and I'll be joining them on Thursday. So, a lot of people going to Norfolk/Suffolk, and all with the same targets! :-O

Jimmy, thanks very much for posting on the young birders blog; you're dead right, it really needs people to post in order for it to get going again. Without any posts, how is it going to progress? ;)

Cheers,

Joseph

Are you meeting up with Simeon? He said something like that, and looks like you are going to be in that area if Stone Curlew's on your list. If you do, definitely drop in on the Bluethroat, and I'd suggest you add Golden Oriole to your target list as they're only about 20mins apart.

Yes I am planning to Jimmy, probably on the Friday or Saturday. I'm going to be spending a day in the Thetford area plus the western fringes of Norfolk and that's the day me and Simeon were thinking of meeting up. I'm going to get in contact with him shortly so we can arrange things further. I will probably go and look for the Bluethroat with Simeon if he's up for it on that day too. Golden Oriole was already on my target list; I didn't list it however as birding maniac had previous to me. ;)

Thanks,

Joseph

Good, I wouldn't want you to miss out :t:

Neither would I, you've always got to pounce at oppurtunities after all. :t:

Didn't manage to get out as I said I might on the yearlist thread today, but never mind, I've got the Norfolk/Suffolk trip ahead of me! ;)

Hi everyone, ive just got back from white coppis and saw 1 cucoo, 1 redstart, 1 garden warbler and all the more common birds e.g. robin, chaffinch. Sadly no pied or spotted flycatchers but it was still a good day

You've done a good job on getting the blog back up and running, Joseph. I'll try and post something on it soon when I get a chance.

One thing I would say is that on the blog list, my surname is Dykes, not Dyke. Don't want people getting the wrong idea about me ;)

Good work Joseph, I'll put on a trip report from Anglesey sometime soon too. Also, I Don't know how it could be done, but have you considered putting a photo gallery on the blog too? I think it could catch on and most of us have a camera of some kind or another, and there are several excellent photos already on the blog

Apologies for the error, I am aware you are Billy Dykes, it must have been a typo. Cheers to both of you for being eager to post on the blog, as posting is what the blog needs to get itself going again. Will look forward to reading your report, Liam. Is it possible if you two can send me year list updates to [email protected] and also outline your new highlights? It will help in the updating of the blog. Although it has occured to me that you might not be taking part in the yearlisting competition on there Billy; would I be right in that assumption? ;)

I am off to Norfolk/Suffolk tommorow evening, so I won't be online for a while now. I'm really looking forward to the trip, and what with a few rarer species around as well as the specialities which I wish to see, I'm hoping for the best! Will likely report on the young birders blog when I return.

Joseph

Hehe wouldn't want that happening :p. As a complete non-contributor to the blog I think the Gropper's idea about having some sort of gallery would be a really good idea, although I wonder if that's possible on a conventional blog hosting site. If not it's still a good looking site. Not much going on around mey ends but I did see a clouded yellow fly through whilst I was out, which was a really nice surprise. Oh what I'd do for a bird that colour to turn up on my patch!

well, I'll get out me traps and send a Yellowhammer or two up your way;)B :)

for a minimal extra price I'll even send up some part-yellow birds, Blue Tit, Great Tit and Goldfinch8-P

P.S my traps are all totally humane, I lure out a male yellowhammer, with the scent of horny female bunting on my hand, hypnotize him and send him on his way;):smoke:
