Just wondered if any one can recommend a good book. There seem to be loads of bird books on the market. Is there a essential ?

My backstop for Birds of Britain & Europe is the RSPB Complete Birds of Britain & Europe not cheap at around 25.00 pounds but is a comprehensive & excellent reference, comes complete with a birdsong CD which I have also found useful. Suggest would make an excellent Xmas present maybe you need to drop a few hints.

I have a great book that came with CDs so you can learn all the bird songs and calls.
I also have another field-guide book that i use to identify birds.

If it's a Field Guide you're looking for then they don't come much better than the Collins. On Amazon at http://www.amazon.co.uk/Collins-Bir...=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1288162291&sr=1-1

Collins is a very good book and has the most detailed images I have ever come across. However, if you're relatively new to birding, then you may find it includes too many species ad it becomes hard to find what you are seeing in the field. If this is the case, I'd recommend starting with an RSPB handbook which is aimed at solely British species. Give it a year or two and then get your Collins out:t:

It depends how much of a serious birder you are. If you are only a beginner, the RSPB Pocket Guide is a good book, but I feel that now I know most birds, the RSPB Handbook is way better. But if you are seriously getting into birding and go twitching, abroad etc, The Collins is a must have.

RSPB Complete Birds of Britain and Europe (Rob Hume) comes with a CD with 99 bird song/calls. Cost £30 Too big to carry round more of a book to look through at home.
I paid £8 new.

RSPB BIRDS OF BRITAIN AND EUROPE (Rob Hume) Smaller version of the above book.
Cost £16.99 About as big as you would want to carry around for most people.
I paid £11.99 new.

COLLINS BIRD GUIDE 2nd EDITION (Lars Svensson, Killian Mullarney & Dan Zetterstrom)
Cost £25 for Hardback and £17.99 for Paperback. A bit smaller than above book.
I paid £6 new.

The New BIRDWATCHER'S POCKET GUIDE to Britain and Europe (Peter Hayman & Rob Hume )
Cost £9.99 Smallest of the above and easily fits in a pocket.
I paid £1.99 new.

None of the books were bought online.
I know that some will have gotten some of these books even cheaper new.

Good luck with your choice. :t:

Is the Hayman and Hume pocket guide not available in softcover. I remember having an edition of this that had a soft plastic cover.

I cant seem too find a softcover version.

I have seen a very similar one that is hardback in WHSMITH. They might even be the same book but in a hardback. If I get the chance tomorrow I will take my book in and compare them.
Mine with the soft plastic cover I bought 3-4 years ago.
