Wicked McM, looks like wader heaven!.... and thanks for the free advert! ;)

Free advert?

You think anyone but you, me and me mum reads this drivel? ;D

Note "slightly" muddy troos...almost dived in for a wee free "beauty" treatment to celebrate surviving another year!

Fun read as always. Enjoyed the shot of the GHL's 'insane eye' and the black naped oriele ! The Cockle Picker shot is a cracker.

The height of our high season has seen me paying for my sins, added to the fact that the motor in my birding lens failed (so off to Japan for 2 months - wish I could go with it) sent me into a state od deep depression, add to that our 25th wedding anniv (and a short dirty mid-weekday trip to HZ - no that's not the cause of the depression) means I've not really been out for weeks (bar a short search for birds in 40C+ heat outside the hotel) !

However I bought a new camera and 500mm lens and that has me raring to go - after more clients this week. So maybe we can catch up for that coffee afer this week !

Speculative Sunday...

With Tong reporting large numbers of Siberian Blue Robins (300) up in Yangkou last week and it being late August and so migration time...and...talk of another typhoon heading into Shanghai in next couple of days...the decision was made to take a speculative trip out to Yangshan and Nanhui this morning...

Usual 0430 taxi to the meeting point with Jocko and about an hour's drive south saw us arrive at Yangshan container port and trying our luck...

It was sunny, blue skies and quiet...very quiet...we saw virtually nothing! Resident Chinese Bulbuls and Tree Sparrows...a couple of Eastern Crowned Warblers...a Grey-streaked Flycatcher and loads of shrikes both Brown and Long-tailed...a toad and some domestic chickens completed the excitement!

The decision to try Nanhui was an easy one to make and we were soon back on the mainland and heading for the seawall...tide was high but some exposed mud had a distant gull flock and many Little Ringed Plovers on it. The marshes were quiet too...a female Eurasian Kestrel cruised by and a few egrets flopped about. The Holiday Inn Express car park was quiet...1 Asian Brown Flycatcher, a couple of alba wagtails was all we had to show...

On to the wader mud...to find things under water and no waders...so ended our morning...you've got to be in it to win it though and still good to be out and about...

Way to be "in it"!

By the way, do you find any tide tables helpful for predicting tides? I use one Chinese one, though I can't really judge it's accuracy. (It's found here - but a little Chinese reading is helpful.) Don't know if anyone has any table they like better...

Kevin & Mark's Excellent Adventure...or...Phewey Nanhui!

Kevin and I hit the hotspots in Shanghai and managed to see one of these...told you it was a good day Jeff...!

More anon once the processing is done...

Nice record!A few days ago one dropped into a house in suburb Cixi at the southern bank of Hangzhou Bay while yr bird is at the northern bank of Hangzhou Bay.A few years ago one was photoed in Nanhui in flight. And before that, one was flushed by hightide from the mudflat of Rudong and was photoed in flight.

Forgot to say,the young lady posted the bird in her blog and asked for help. She released the bird but it stayed in the tree in her backyard for a whole night. She worried that it would be hurt by cat etc so caught it back. Then a local birder who is a journalist went to her house to help release it again in the field. The bird recovered and flew away once got out of the box.
Many birders followed this whole story in their blogs to give suggestions and this became big news in Cixi, even Zhejiang Province.

Happy to see what's happening in common peoples' minds rather than 'eat it' :)

Hi Zhang Lin

Jocko reports he had one in his compound yesterday too so peak migration for Pitta! Hopefully Kevin has some good shots of ours too.

Yangshan had flycatchers and Eastern Crowned Warbler in abundance...pics and words on their way!

cheers
