It looks like you have picked a female to photograph which means there is no scent line: a diagnostic feature. In addition, the other important difference between Small and Essex Skipper are the antenna which should be viewed from underneath so that the brown, in the case of Small Skipper, and black for Essex, can be seen. The upper part of the antenna, as viewed in your image, look dark in both species. Better luck next time.
