At the half-way point in March the monthly list presently stands on 82 and the year list on 95. March has recorded an average of 93.83 species with a peak of 97 in 2014 and a low of 90 in 2015.

Hopefully the warm southerly winds predicted from the middle on next week onwards will break the cycle of westerly gales and see a real push of early spring migrants. Potential additions for the remainder of the month include (year ticks in bold):-

Pintail, Garganey, Mandarin, Goosander, Merlin, Osprey, Marsh Harrier, Golden Plover, Ringed Plover, Little Ringed Plover, Jack Snipe, Woodcock, Common Sandpiper, GBBG Gull, Mediterranean Gull, Feral Pigeon, Tawny Owl, Little Owl, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Wheatear, Stonechat, Swallow, House Martin, Blackcap, Willow Warbler, Raven, House Sparrow, Brambling, Yellowhammer

I had 4 Feral Pigeon on the 3rd March at the Flashes Phil, but as I don't personally count them I omitted them from my sightings from that day.

When did we have Common Sand this year?

Due to attempted unauthorised entry today there will be no news broadcast of the duck - we will have to hope it relocates to Upton

JackSnipe

They both look like Common Snipe to me - barred flanks, head shape, etc??

John

Sorry Phil A As usual I appear to have got it wrong. In my defence I honestly thought the beak was shorter and in a brief head on view it looked like a jack snipe.

For JJS not sure I like the - hopefully unintended - peremptory way in which I have been told but I take the point.

For Phil A again the attached photos of a jack as comparison were taken at the Moors but NOT THIS MONTH .

Pic 1 side view of a real jack snipe
Pic 2 front on view. Both taken 16/10/13 by me at The Moors as a newbe - somebody identified them for me.
Obviously I'm a slow learner.
Pic 3 The pic I posted the other day as the supposed jack.
