Barn swallows - group behavior question

I have been watching a nest of barn swallows on the eave of my porch. I can see them through a small window in my front door without disturbing them. It's been a little over 2 weeks, and a baby fledged today. We thought he was dead because he was so very still, & seemed to have plunged into...

    Noisiest bird pound for pound?

Tim42, I have a baby mockingbird in my fence, covered by a thick jasmine vine. I suppose he was the only one who hatched. His parents try to be so discreet regarding his location..... they look around & try to make sure no one notices them when they pop in to feed him. However, it's useless...

    What is a vagrant?

I have seen this term used throughout this forum. Does it mean a solitary hummer? Does that imply that other hummers migrate in groups?

salvia - is red best, or will any color do?

Thanks! I appreciate such specific information. I will look for the plants mentioned. I had no idea there were so many kinds, but live & learn, right? So far I've been lucky & had plants by accident that they liked, or at least seem to like (hosta, butterfly bush, cannas, petunias, hibiscus...

salvia - is red best, or will any color do?

I want to add some plants before my regular sweeties get here, & I know they like salvia. A couple of colors beside red would fit best into my yard, but I will certainly use red if they like it best. Any opinions?

Could my garage mockingbird have abandoned the nest?

Haven't seen mom in about 2 days. Up until then, she flew out of the garage just about every time we went in there. Are they known to abandon in any signficant way? I confess I was dreading being dive-bombed when the babies came, but now I feel guilty, like I wished them away. Eggs are still there.

    Mockingbird nest in my garage!

I just read the previous post about birds nesting in a garage. These are specifically northern mockingbirds. There were 2 eggs last time I looked. Interestingly, a 3rd egg was found on the driveway (before we even knew about the nest) & it broke. Lots of yolk, nothing else that we could see...

    hello, have lots to learn

This looks like an excellent site. I am blessed to be surrounded by Eastern Bluebirds, Killdeer & hummingbirds on my property. Currently having a mockingbird problem, which I will address in another forum. I'm sure I'm the first to have such a problem! : ) Anyway, this looks like a wonderful...
