Endemic to the Cape Verde Islands in the Atlantic.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
It was formerly considered conspecific with Common Buzzard. It has been proposed to lump it with Common Buzzard again.

The diet includes rabbits, rodents, ground birds, reptiles and carrion.
