Identification

16-19 cm.

Distribution

Lesser Sundas and Java

Taxonomy

Sometimes regarded conspecific with Golden Whistler.

Some of this taxon's subspecies may warrant species status.

Clements recognises the following subspecies [1]:

  • P. c. javana: Eastern Java and Bali
  • P. c. everetti: Tanahjampea, Kalaotoa and Madu islands (Flores Sea)
  • P. c. fulvotincta: Western Lesser Sundas (Sumbawa to Alor)
  • P. c. fulviventris: Sumba (Lesser Sundas)
  • P. c. calliope: Eastern Lesser Sundas (Rote, Timor, Semau and Wetar)

Formerly recognized subspecies "arthuri" is currently considered a synonym of "calliope", but reference [4] notes that the mitochondrial DNA of subspecies calliope and arthuri is divergent.

Behaviour

Feeds mainly on insects and spiders.
