Identification
27cm. Male: Thick, red-based, pale greenish bill, broad green eyering, grey crown, maroon above, green below. Female: No maroon above
Distribution
Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Taxonomy
- T. c. nipalensis: south-central Nepal eastward through Yunnan in China and northern Vietnam, southward through northern Eastern Ghats of northeastern Peninsular India, southern Thailand, and southern Vietnam
- T. c. hainanus: Hainan, central Guangdong, and Hong Kong
- T. c. curvirostra: Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Riau and Lingga archipelagoes, Borneo, Palawan, and Mindoro (southwestern Philippines)
- T. c. haliplous: Simeulue (off northwestern Sumatra)
- T. c. pegus: Nias (off northwestern Sumatra)
- T. c. smicrus: Batu and Mentawai Islands (off west-central Sumatra)
- T. c. hypothapsinus: Enggano (off southwestern Sumatra)
Subspecies
This is a monotypic species[1]. Clements recognizes these subspecies[1]:

Moist lowland forests and mangrove forests.
