This is a polytypic species[1] consisting of 6 subspecies.

Subspecies

  • P. m. davisoni: *High mountains of southern Malay Peninsula
  • P. m. barisanus: *Mountains of Sumatra
  • P. m. montis: - *Mountains of Borneo (Kinabalu to Poi Range)
  • P. m. xanthopygius: - *Mountains of Palawan (south-western Philippines)
  • P. m. floris: - *Mountains of Flores (western Lesser Sundas)
  • P. m. paulinae: - *Mountains of Timor (eastern Lesser Sundas)

Habitat

Lower and middle storey of montane forest and bamboo stands.

Behaviour

Very active birds.

Diet

Their diet consists of insects and small invertebrates.
