Unknown hawk - Ionian Islands, Greece

OK, I will post a different thread once I can get the original file then. But from what I saw in the camera when I was shown the pictures the quality is pretty much the same.

Unknown hawk - Ionian Islands, Greece

My friend was on vacation last week on Zakynthos Island (aka Zante) and they sent me this picture of a buzzard (?). I am kind of lost considering the variation in plumage in so many species of raptors, but my first guess was Long Legged Buzzard (Buteo rufinus). I found this picture from Greece...

    Tern species (Greece, Europe)

On May 5th I went to a birding hotspot but not for birding (I was upset). I only managed to get these bad pictures. This is probably a lifer for me. I thought at first that it was a common tern but the swallow-like forked tail is clearly not there. I am confused because I have little experience...

    bunting (?) ID (Northern Greece)

Oh a serin? Thank you all, I never even considered finches! Another lifer for me 😌

    bunting (?) ID (Northern Greece)

In January 29th I saw this yellow passerine that I first thought was a yellowhammer, BUT then i realized that a lot of species look like that. It was seen in a marsh area next to the coast. It flew off before I could get better footage. Maybe i'm just overthinking again and it's just a corn...

    raptor ID (Northen Greece)

I think maybe a falcon species and not an Accipitriformes species, because of the wing shape?? (I also cant find any Accipitriformes species that have such pale primaries, unless that is a plumage deformity? very unlikely) I saw this flying over a marsh around sea level. It flapped rather than...

plover + small shorebird ID (Greece)

I saw these in August of 2020 in Epanomi lagoon, near Thessaloniki. Maybe not the best time for shorebirds, but there were a few around. If you know what any of these are, please specify the number of the picture! 1 and 2 is the same individual, I think kentish plover? But not 100% sure 3 some...

    Dead raptor ID (Greece)

we have common buzzards in the area (who doesnt honestly) and I think if it were an osprey it would have darker wings, thank you all for your help

    Dead raptor ID (Greece)

Is that so? It would have never crossed my mind. They dont have a sustaining breeding population in Greece as far as I know, but there are still some resident and some passing during migration. But if anyonehas any other suggestions I'd like to hear them too because osprey might be a bit rare

    Dead raptor ID (Greece)

I saw this corpse washed up on the shore. I took a close-up of its talons to see if that helps with the identification. I found it in the Thermaikos gulf, Thessaloniki. Anyone know what It might be? I dont know many birds of prey, and this one is really decomposed. I just worry if it is a rare...

    possibly zitting cisticola? (Thessaloniki, Greece)

okay, thanks for the clarification, I am not here that often... I ruled out moustaches warbler because of the eyestripe like you said, and I just looked up sage warbler and didnt find any past reports in the area. thank you for replying to all my posts today as well, because i've spammed a lot...

    possibly zitting cisticola? (Thessaloniki, Greece)

I took a picture of this bird at a marsh yesterday. I am not sure about zitting cisticola, I think it looks too dark (may be the bad lighting, it was a cloudy day) and too chunky. But then again I dont know any passerines with a clear, unspotted chest, that would match the wing pattern and...

    passerine ID (Thessaloniki, Greece)

    okay, thank you : )

    passerine ID (Thessaloniki, Greece)

I saw this one at a wetland with lots of reeds yesterday. It looks like an emberiza species to me but I am not quite sure, because I've never seen it before. Maybe a female reed bunting? because I saw a male near there a few weeks ago.

thank you. I have a very hard time with birds of prey...

    Raptor identification (Thessaloniki area, Greece)

I saw this one today, it looks like a common buzzard, but the color variation in there birds confuses me, and I can't find many reference pictures of common buzzards with this plumage sitting down. Is there a chance that this is something else, like a european marsh harrier? (there are marsh...

    Crows - Poland

I live in an area where we only have the hooded crow of these two species. But, never seen a hooded crow with such a dark plumage! Probably not a pure hooded crow, and most likeyly a hybrid since the two species are so closely related.

Possibly a nightjar? [AUDIO] (Greece, europe)

that is what I thought at first too... but my friend asked me if there is a chance that it is a bird, and then I couldnt get that thought off my mind... thank you for your reply. Yes I realised that nightjar is copmletely off the table when I found out the species was strictly migratory
