    Leica Monovid

Thanks for the mini review, CloseFocus. I have the Leica 8x20 Ultravid binoculars and a Nikon 5x15 monocular - I love using both of them. When I want to travel very light, I usually just take the Nikon monocular. However, since I often lend it to my travelling companions, I thought I might buy...

    Nikon ED50 Mini Review

I haven't been out with this setup in ages, simply because I haven't been out with a scope in ages. I would recommend you try out your scope on a few different tripods at a dealer to see if the ultra lightweight (and therefore often shorter) tripods are still comfortable for observation. As I...

    Nikon ED50 Mini Review

ED50 with Gitzo GT1541T and G2180 I wanted a really lightweight setup so I paired the ED50 with the Gitzo Traveller GT1541T tripod and Gitzo G2180 fluid head. Scope (angled version inkl. 27 W DS eyepiece): 680 g Tripod: 978 g Fluid head (inkl. attachment plate but excl. panning arm): 502 g...

Dynamic range combined with a fisheye lens...

Thanks Yossi, I was hoping you were going to tell me all these really positive things about the 16-85! |=)|

Dynamic range combined with a fisheye lens...

Great shot, Yossi. I also like your travel kit. I was in Iceland a few weeks ago and took with me the 17-55 f/2.8 and the 70-300 VR on the D300. I was very happy with this combination, though I feel the 17-55 is sometimes too bulky for my general travel needs (though its low light capabilities...

Just want to make sure, as it's my first Brünnich's Guillemot... is this correct?

    Shag amongst Cormorants? Iceland, May

The bird at the top left looks different to the others. The others have white throats and yellowish black beaks, so I assume they're Cormorants. However, the other bird has no white throat, has a yellowish white cheek mark at the corner of the its black bill, and the hint of a crest... does that...

Sorry if it's a daft question, but I'm completely new to sea birds. Is this a Kittiwake?

Marsh Tit confirmation based on song (South Germany)

Thanks for the info, Poecile. I listened to the songs on the Latvian Birding link - their Marsh Tits are much faster and the Willow Tits are slower than the bird I heard. However, the recording you provided as an attachment is very much like the song I heard - similar sound and in particular a...

Marsh Tit confirmation based on song (South Germany)

I think it sounds very much like the second half of the RSPB's Marsh Tit recording - the chup, chup, chup, chup bit. I don't remember it having the slight slurred and elongated sound of the Willow. It was more of a terse and choppy "chup" or "dee". If I ignore WHAT it said and concentrate on HOW...

Marsh Tit confirmation based on song (South Germany)

Hi Paul, Definitely wasn't a Blue Tit - unless of course Blue Tits have such extreme colour variation that they have no blue in them at all! |=)| It looked like a Marsh or Willow. I'll check out the RSPB site, as you suggested, and have a listen.

Marsh Tit confirmation based on song (South Germany)

I've seen my first Marsh Tit... err, or was it a Willow Tit? Was walking along the shore of Illmensee (lake) in South Germany. Lots of reeds, mixed woodland and very dark, spongy and moist soil (peat I guess). If my memory serves me well, I heard a "doo dee dee dee dee dee dee dee". That's one...

    Nikon ED50 Mini Review

I bought an ED50 A in Germany a couple of weeks ago to complement my ED82 A. I had no trouble finding the scope body on its own - I've so far seen more online retailers in Germany offering the scope on its own than bundled with an eyepiece. When the shipment arrived, the package was so small I...
