I recently saw this duck in Surrey in the UK and haven't been able to find out what it is yet.

Any help would be great,

Female Carolina Wood Duck, I think, so probably an escape/captiveH

Great thanks! It had a duckling with it so I guess I should look out for the male?

The male is much more colourful.

Why isn't it a female Mandarin? The white orbital ring doesn't look extensive enough for Wood duck.

Looks more like a female Mandarin Duck to me. I think they have feral populations in Britain, but not sure where.

No doubt someone will be along soon to provide more info!

the mandarin duck has a thriving feral population in parts of the UK but the Wood Duck hasnt.

Mandarin has had a feral population in Surrey, eg Virginia Water, for longer than I've been birding. It's where I first saw one about 43 years ago.
