Dalian (Jinshitan) Birding Reports (6 Viewers)

Swamped at work for the last bit. I did have a Little Owl land on my roof last night and call so loud that I jumped right out of my bed! That's two Owl species on my roof and the other was an Eagle Owl for those who remember the post from a while back. While I am on here I should also say that I heard my first Olive-backed Pipit of the fall after dusk last Thursday night. Lots in the area at the moment but I've having trouble getting out.

Jinshitan Ridge Sept. 6, 2014

Had big plans to be on a main mountain ridge before 5am this morning but woke up to dense fog. Did get there from 9-11 am but not much was happening. This is the new place that I can reach by motorbike. Can't wait for raptor season as this place is directly on the line most raptors use to head south. More to come from there for sure. The place is right beside the Sea-farming Ponds.

Jinshitan Ridge September 8, 2014

Had a bit of time in the afternoon so headed up to this migration viewpoint with my mom. Just a trickle of raptors starting. Amur Falcons were slow but steady. It's easy to get more than the total of Amurs we had today. Can't wait for the next 5-6 weeks when raptors will take over lower Liaoning. Paul Holt and Terry Townshend are at Laotieshan now and it sounds like things are just getting started there as well. No photos of what must have been an early Saker Falcon. We saw an extremely pale large falcon that had me thinking Gyr but that would be totally out of the picture, especially in early September. I had a good look through my bins from the trail before my camera was set up. Would love to have a photo of what we saw. Must be a Saker but was very very pale.

Jinshitan Sea-farming Ponds Sept. 9, 2014

Had 45 minutes of very hurried birding after work today. I never got off my bike and just drove around for a bit before heading home. Did not cover the area well at all. I'm in need of some more birders in this area of the world to really get a picture of what passes through here. I did have a Peregrine take a Little Grebe right in front of me today and fly directly over showing off its prize.

On a different note, I set up a wildlife camera trap with a new class I'm teaching titled Environmental Wildlife 12. It's out over night with a dead chicken laying in front of it. Have no idea what we'll get but am hoping for more than a photo of a local farmer just before the camera goes missing. It's well hidden in a dense forest area where I thought I heard a mammal moving at night last June when Owl/Nightjar birding. We'll see........

I did a quick trip that way to check my camera trap. I did get a Eurasian Red Squirrel in the camera trap there the next day. Not the most exciting mammal but it's a start!

Nice set of pictures! I am working on identifying a local falcon, and enjoy looking at your pics and comparing them with what I've seen. I think it's great to have caught a red squirrel on your camera trap - they are just harder to see here than other parts of the world. Hope you find some other interesting critters too.

Fun to see your pic of the hawkmoth (?) as well - I just saw one the other day and had to catch myself from thinking it was a hummingbird - no longer on that continent :-O

Country Club Sept. 12, 2014

Quick hour at the Country Club before the memory card in my camera started acting up saying it was not accessible. After some freaking out about losing quality Pallas's Grasshopper Warbler and adult Shrenck's Bittern photos the crisis was resolved by the lady in the local computer shop (I need both for the second edition of my book that I'm working on). Fortunately she had a USB card reader and I was able to get the photos off of my camera and format the card. For all of you camera users out there, be sure to format your card from time to time.....when they are empty....... There was more to see at the Country Club but I was very worried about my camera at the time. I'm out early again tomorrow on the ridge.

On another note, at Loatieshan, Paul Holt had 800 Honey Buzzards in 1 hour today (mid morning). He then had over 100 Needletails later!

Great pics especially the PG Tips. On Happy Island we had a pretty good idea they'd be in specific habitats so basically we'd walk through the dense stuff towards an isolated bush on the fringe and if your luck was in they'd jump into the bush and sit there. Managed to work out well several times.

Highlight would be the 23 White-throated Needletails.

Paul texted me to mention that he had 10, 200 Ashy Minivets today mostly before 8:30 am! Yes, those are the right number of zeros. He also had a number of Jaegers out over the sea this morning.

Mike,

The Pallas's Grasshopper Warbler was in some grass at the country club where I was walking. I didn't see it until I almost stepped on it. It flew up to the tree and sat there like it thought I didn't see it. I was overjoyed to have one sit in the open and stay there as I took photos from all sides. I think my memory card had problems because I took close to 300 photos in 2 minutes. I left it there in the tree, thanked it, and told it to carry on :) You are right, usually they jump into thicker stuff and are frustrating to photograph. The poor lady at the computer shop didn't understand what this crazy guy was getting excited about when she was able to rescue the picture of a little brown bird. She clicked on one and said, "this bird?" I admitted to her that it wasn't the most beautiful individual but that it was very hard to photograph. Not sure that she understood....
