Jinshitan Sea-farming Ponds Oct. 30, 2014

Gretchen, yes they are nice enough to always sit on top of the nearest perch. Their entire home area is under threat at the moment as Jinshitan expands outwards. Lots of equipment and machinery in that area now.

Early morning visit to the ponds yesterday morning. More signs of a cold winter with a Common Merganser and an Upland Buzzard that looked to be taking up a winter range.

Jinshitan Sea-farming Ponds Nov. 6, 2014

Another China lifer waiting there Wed. afternoon in the form of a group of Lapland Longspurs. I was unsure of what they were so thanks to Terry and my brother in Canada for the confirmations! I was clear that they were not something I had ever seen there before but had horrible pictures taken just before dark. I went out today again for an hour around lunch and saw three more distant ones. I'm out again shortly to have another look. I saw a flock of 35 very tightly together lifting up, landing, lifting up, etc... Flights calls were unlike anything I'd ever heard so I snapped away with the camera to check out later.

I was on a Little Owl count as I finally had some time and wanted to see how many I could find. I was at 4 before the Longspurs showed up and that ended the owl counting quite suddenly.

Jinshitan Sea-farming Ponds Nov. 8, 2014

I spent most of my time today hanging around where the Lapland Longspurs were being seen for the past two days and can confirm that all are still present. Because of this, I covered a different area of the pond habitat than I usually do. The stork this morning I believe to be the first of its kind at the ponds. They are annual and can be locally common most winters in certain areas around Dalian (Wafangdian, Jinzhou Bay, Lushun) but I usually don't see them at the ponds here in Jinshitan.

The Purple Heron is very late and could be the same individual I saw last week as well. How many times have Purple Heron and Oriental Stork been seen at the same location on the same day before?

A Short-eared Owl flew across the road directly in front of my wife and I returning home late Saturday night on the motorbike. It was clearly in hunting mode and we waited in vain for it to return out of the darkness.

Missed out the action from the East-North(DongBei). First things first, congrats on the Lapland Bunting, Tom. They are not the best looking Buntings in Winter but definitely "must die for" in their nuptial plumage.

The Bluethroat in post #1204, is it regular for them to be up there this late? The Goldeneye's in #1208 are another "die for". Good stuff Tom!

John, yes the lighting of often very good here just before the sun goes down. I'm not sure what type of tree it is but it does grow in many places around here.

Dev, it was a very good fall for Bluethroat here. I usually see only 1 or none each fall.

Lapland Lonspurs are still here in small numbers. I was delighted to find 3 this morning in the same place as a few weeks ago. I had a boat arranged for this morning to take a closer look at some cormorants but the wind was up to much and it was cancelled. Plenty of Great Egret around the pond areas today.

Meant to comment earlier on your flocks - enjoyed both the shelducks and egrets. Were the egrets in stopover mode - interesting to see the group in a pretty dry looking area (or were they hunting insects?). They also look a bit focused on something.

Gretchen, yes the egrets should be out of this area by now but this group was sitting out near the sea wall like they had stopped for a bit of a rest. I'm sure they're gone by now. They were focused on me because I flushed them while driving one of the trails. I hadn't seem them and was scanning distant ponds for ducks when they took off at close range and landed again. I think we were both just as surprised to see each other.

A flock of common or ruddy shelduck flying with mountains in the background has to be one of the best winter sites around. Both species really show their beauty in flight.
