Black Rapid Strap for 300/2.8 (1 Viewer)

Occasional bird snapper
Has anyone tried a Black Rapid strap with a 300/2.8 OR heavier lens. Also if so how do you attach it - to the lens rather than the Camera I would guess. Do you screw directly into the tripod collar or could you use a lens plate and QR clamp?
