Hi larophiles
I remain terminally bewildered by immature large gulls. (It doesn't help that my thought processes are slowed by a daily background med for neuropathic pain, and that I get eye pain from looking at books or screens for more than a short time).
I guess the gull in the attached photos, taken in south London today, is the usual Herring Gull L.a. argenteus but would be glad of confirmation. To use the terminology I understand, a first winter bird.
I'm aware of Lou's excellent explanation posted on 19 September 2013 but still struggle.
Thanks!
