National Geographic Field Guide 5th Edition (1 Viewer)

This came out on paperback. I never paid for a current edition. This one is a sturdy paper bound book on glossy paper. The pictures are mostly the same from the #rd edition plus new ones. But the printing brings out detail and color this time. The has 7 thumb index tabs, such as Gulls. the gulls are still a bit too white and pale, but overall, pretty good. I did not see much change in the range maps.

I think this was hard cover earlier, and I do not use hard cover guides much in the field. Price $ 24 on shelves, maybe less on line. 500 pages.

I paid $16 and some change online, plus shipping. It's a revamped version of the last edition with a few obvious improvements. It still needs some reworking in my opinion. The majority of wood-warblers and several sparrows are in need of new artwork. Why can't we have illustrations like the tanagers and first several pages of the Tyrant flycatchers? Those are superb. Immature warblers are a tricky bunch and quite popular with fall birders. New art on these birds is long overdue. This new edition is a mixture of old and new but still worth having .
