Birding today on the reserve

Moors:
The most conspicuous aspect of today's birding was the concentration of birds in and off the shore of the Lagoon. This was as a result of massive hatch of insects in this area. the BHG's were picking them of the surface 'phalarope like' as did the teal but the other ducks were catching just below the surface. No diving ducks were present but all the dabblers on the pool were feasting here.
A walk through the promontory on resulted in 1 each of Jack and common snipe.
Another interesting appearance was a reasonably sized winter thrush flock. At least 200 birds were feeding on the A38 field.
Species count MOORS:
GCG 2, Little grebe 5, little egret 2,
Shoveler 16, Teal 19, gadwall 12, shelduck 6, mallard 15, Pochard 24 (17 males), Tufted c20, coot 120, water rail at least 5 calling plus 2 on the North Moors. Avocet 16 from Flashes briefly, Jack snipe, common snipe 2, Oystercatcher 4, BHG 300, Herring gull ad, LBBG 2,
Stock dove 5, collared dove, kingfisher, green woodp 2, skylark,
Song Thrush 4 singing, Fieldfare 80, Redwing 120+, starling 30, cetti's w 2 singing,
Feeding Station: Greenfinch 20, reed bunting 12.

NORTH MOORS: Little egret, shelduck pr, teal pr, water rail 2, cetti's w, song thrush

SAILING POOL: GCG 6, Tufted 11, Oystercatcher 2 on platform

FLASHES: The BHG colony is now in residence and the volume has been cranked up a few notches.8-P
Although this evening several Lapwing were loudly displaying and scraping.
The Light male Barn owl appeared at 6.16pm from the right of the hide and flew around the back and off over to the 1st Flash and not seen again. A large flock of winter thrushes fed in the north field numbering 320+.

Species count FLASHES:
Teal 16, Shelduck pr, Greylag 15,
Avocet 21, curlew 15, green sand 2, lapwing 370, oystercatcher 2,
BHG 750 roosted, LBBG,
Barn owl,
green woodp,
Fieldfare 130, redwing c190,
starling 210,

Today on the Reserve

The water had fallen on the Moors but was still 35cm higher than it was on Tuesday 8th March.
A very spring like day once the sun came out, plenty of insects hatching and birds singing. A slight exodus of dabblers but generally most birds were as of 8th March. Little grebes were very vocal and an influx of 3 on to the North Moors was notable.
North Moors:
Little grebe 3, GCG, teal 3, tufted 7, coot 4, water rail 2,
Singing birds :- Cetti's, goldcrest, song thrush 2, bullfinch 2, reed bunting 2,

MOORS:
GCG 5, little grebe 5, little egret, greylag 2, Shoveler 13, teal 10, gadwall 10, shelduck 3, pochard 23 (16 males), tufted 42, coot 120, Oystercatcher 4, Buzzard 3, Nuthatch 2, cetti's 2, lesser redpoll 2,

FLASHES: The new sluice has certainly been a success in getting water off quickly, in 2 days the level is just 2cm below Wednesday's flood level of 0.7+. The old sluice would have taken 5 days at least to drop to the current level of 0.46 (normal for this time of year)
Little egret, Teal 26, shoveler 3, shelduck 2, coot 25.
Avocet 10, curlew 2, lapwing 225, Oystercatcher 2.
kingfisher, Raven
cetti's w singing, goldcrest singing
fieldfare 40, redwing 100, song thrush 2 singing.

Hello! This is my first post, after lurking here for a few weeks - just wanted to say what a fantastic place you have at Upton Warren. I took my little girl there today as she had the day off school (teacher day). I was a bit apprehensive about taking her by myself, as I am very new to watching waterbirds, but I needn't have worried - everyone I met was so friendly and welcoming.

It is obvious that a lot of love and care goes into maintaining the reserve - it really is a magical place to visit.

A special thank you to Paul, who very kindly pointed out a green sandpiper for us at dusk on the flashes, and gave me lots of advice about where and when to see the different species I've yet to find :) Shame the barn owl didn't show up while we were there - we will just have to go again for another try!
