And on to all-dayers proper. To secure the date now in your diaries, the annual Spring All-Day Birdwatch this year will be on Saturday 7th May (the weekend after the May Day bank holiday). The usual mix of birds, banter, bacon butties and baking - more details closer to the time. Hoping to tap up a number of other West Midlands sites - Belvide, Sandwell, Grimley, Marsh Lane, Venus Pool, Middleton, Salford Priors - to also take part

John recorded two adult BHGs in the roost tonight sporting white leg rings.

28D1 is an old favourite. It was originally ringed in the nest at Hosehill Berkshire on the 4th June 2011 and has previously been recorded at Upton Warren on the 5th May 2013, again on the 9th and 28th March 2014 and finally last year at the Moors Pool on the 24th June and then at the Flashes on the following day. It has also been noted back at Hosehill later in 2011 and on the River Lee, County Cork on the 1st January 2012. I am not aware of any ringed bird that has been previously noted at Upton Warren in four consecutive years. I will contact Tim Ball in Berkshire to see if I can get an updated history for this bird.

J6Y6 is a new bird not previously noted at Upton Warren. The code appears to be from a Norwegian scheme; I will make contact with the programme co-ordinator and feed-back any history.

Morning update from Dave J at the Flashes:

Adult GBB Gull flew northwest with 3 LBB Gull at 0905, 2 Little Egrets, 20 Avocets, 2 Oystercatchers.

Also 2 Shoveler on Sailing Pool.

Late morning update from Dave J at the Moors Pool:

1 Little Egret, 26 Meadow Pipit, 8 Shelduck, 9 Gadwall, 38 Pochard, 2 Snipe

very random pics from last few days

1. Hen pool from causeway, little egret has been feeding here since water was lowered.
2. transmitter field from back of cuckoo hide. worth checking for wheatear and thrushes over the next few weeks, also chats along hedgerow and on posts.
3. Atmospheric shot of stonechat in scrubby triangle right of cuckoo hide.
4. pair of teal always nice to look at, amazing vermiculations 8-P
5. mystery wader, this species can cause ID problems in winter plumage.;)

Moors today (1)

1. Little Egret North Moors pool. (Teal, shovellers, coots, mallards and a black-headed gull were also there and waterrails were squealing too.)
2. 3 more little egrets in a row on Snipe Island. (All 4 came together briefly - unless there were really 5!)
3, 4, 5. This Great Crested Grebe overestimated his catch. From 3 - 5 took approximately 7 minutes, but I don't know how long he'd been wrestling with this fish (perch?) before we got to the hide. It was alive for most of that time and was eventually deposited dead in front of North Island where GCG seemed to lose interest - exhausted? Quite a fight.
