Hello!

I am visiting Basque Country on March 8-10. Would love to watch sea birds off the coast. Could you recommend good seawatching spot and refer me to someone who could organize a a short boat trip into the ocean?

Thanks!

Where are you staying?

Hello,

The best spot reasonably near Bilbao is Cabo Matxitxako.

There is a cetaceans observatory even. It is close to the old lighthouse. Although the observatory is closed it has a sheltered area with public access.

I have been there only once and I saw some gannets, but of course it depends on luck. Last Spring from Punta Galea (Getxo, 13 Km N of Bilbao) I could watch a lot of gannets and around 40 dolphins for an hour or so. Scope mandatory of course.

As far as I know there are two companies operating near Bilbao that offer boat trips. But I think they only do it between March and October. You can contact them anyway.

http://www.verballenas.com is in Santurtzi, 12 Km North of Bilbao

http://www.hegaluze.com/en/ they operate from Bermeo.

You can give a call anyway, maybe they can arrange something. An alternative would be to try and hitch a ride on a fishing vessel. You can try Bermeo as it has the largest fleet I think.

Ambar is a non profit association devoted to the conservation and study of cetaceans. You could try and contact them, maybe it's possible to join some activity on the weekend. Nevertheless if there is any company operating in Winter I am sure they will know. They are not a commercial operation but I'm sure they would appreciate a donation. (I'm not a member, nor I am affiliated in any way)

Tried all these leads, all was closed this weekend:)

Did you try Matxitako? Access is open except to the closed hide. But it has an open sheltered area.

Anyway nit a good weekend, strong SW winds make it unlikely for birds to approach. NW gales are much better.
