Hi
Does anyone know if the island of Djurgarden is worth birding for a day at this time of year? I'm staying in the city centre for 3 days this coming weekend and from my last visit four months ago Djurgarden seemed the only decent bit of habitat in the city centre?

Hi,

quite a lot of snow now so there might not be much birdlife. Maybe some at "Isbladskärret" at the east end of djurgården. This time of year most larger birds can be found next to the castle where they are fed every day in the water. "Matningsflotten" is located in the water between the castle and kungsträdgården.

Thanks for the reply, that is very helpful information.
I shall also wrap up warm! I was hoping to see lesser spotted woodpecker, tree sparrow and some thrushes, last time I was there i was able to hand feed tits and nuthatch by hand.
Kind Regards
Cliff

Hi Cliff,
Not so many birds around Djurgården this time of year.
You can see the recent sightsings at Djurgården in this link:

Here are recent birds reported around the waters between the Old town and Blaiseholmen/Skeppsholmen:

Here is a link to some birding sites around Stockholm (and elsewhere).

If you are going to Stockholm this time of year, Råstasjön is a must..!
It is in the Stockholm suburb Solna, just 10 mins with the subway from central station.

About 50 herons, a big and well maintained winter feeding and of course the world renowned water rails who have no fear of humans (actually they tried to peck on my friends hat the other day when he was taking a "rail selfie"...)

To NOT go there, especially in winter time, is almost a crime...

I am glad that the map I created comes to use! Thanks for posting it, Gavia!

Hey,
Just arrived! Will be great to get a water rail selfie, I will try and get there tomorrow or Monday, thanks Marie!

Haj
I found the water rail, great close views, also goosander with the many mallard.
Lots of Siskin, gold finch etc. very good views of great spotted woodpecker. More herons together than I have ever seen, 36 stood in a line along one reedbed!
Thanks for the tip Marie, I'm going to try Djurdarden tomorrow to try and find lesser spotted woodpecker.
Regards
Cliff

Not so much at Djurdarden as predicted.
Nice to see lots of tree sparrows and a pair of goldeneye, lots of goosander and finches.
Thanks to all for your helpful advice, off to Malaga tomorrow in search of some more exotic birds!
