Monday 7 May 2018 Out West Again

Monday 7 May 2018
We revisited the West in the hope that we would get more of the same, driving
The opposite way, Eressos to Sigri, without the same success.
The only sightings of note were:
24 Short toed Eagles, including 12 at Sigri sanatorium.
Eleonoras Falcon 1 Sigri sanatorium
5 common buzzards
1 Long legged buzzard
4 wood warblers Meladia Chapel
1 pied flycatcher Meladia Ford

We revisited Faneromeni Lower Ford on both days to check for great snipe, without success.
However others had apparently seen it .
It was our intention to check out Ipsilou but the weather out of Sigri was dreadful, a thunder storm ensued , with cloud defending over the hills and torrential rain.
When we hit Skalachori or brightened up so we parked up at
Solar Array Track.
16 species of woodland bird found here, including:
Hoopoe
Sparrow hawk
Mistle Thrush

Sorry for being behind with this on account of very poor internet.

Re Bush robins
2 guys in a Jimmy pulled up behind us at the racetrack as we were
watching 2 bush robins doing their stuff on the scrub land in the centre.
Anyway as we were having super views from the car, when these two gents
drove around us , parked in front of us and got out of the car.
Dressed in full camouflage gear, they then proceeded to unpack rucksacks
and erect tripods with 600mm lenses , generally making a nuisances of
themselves in respect of the birds, ourselves and another vehicle behind
us , with birders who chose not to break cover.
We left after half an hour, without them getting a shot and the birds now
performing 50m away, probably just about OK for those massive zooms.

We saw those guys a couple of times in the past 3 days. Coming back from Ipsilou, before you get to Andissa , they were parked on the road with their tripods etc out in the middle of the road photographing a wheatear about 20 feet away across the road, with traffic having to drive round them.
The other time was at Metochi where a Reed warbler was visiting its nest virtually between the legs of one of their tripods , stuck in the reeds.
Talk about oblivious.

12 May Sigri Out West

A bit behind with this on acount of poor internet connections and late returns from days out.
The previous day we did the North Coast track, where we saw very little bird wise, endemics, mating common buzzards, a chucka and Montpelier snake.
We a tremendous day with butterflies though.
ter lunch at Sikiminia , butter flying the rest of the day:
Amanda's blue
Common blue
Long tailed blue
Cleopatra
Swallowtail
Scarce swallowtail
Marbled fritillary
Lesser spotted fritillary
Meadow brown
Ilex hairstreak
Small skipper
Large skipper
Southern white admiral
Nettle tree butterfly
Large tortoiseshell
Small white Large white
Black veined white
Dappled white
Common grayling

Meladia Chapel 12/05/18
A day that started out 15c and cloudy ended 25c, windy, bright and sunny.
However another fine day out West with Mark Cassidy and Adam, notable for a big passage of flycatchers (mainly spotted) , buntings and a few shrikes. No new birds for us but at the Fords at Faneromeni were orioles, masked , woodchat and red backed shrikes , dozens of sand martins and a lonesome little bittern. At the lower ford, there was a night heron spooked by a photographer needlessly trapsing up stream, just as we arrived.Icterine, wood, orphean warblers and a whitethroat were still flitting about at the chapel. Over the day we also found Eleonoras, Goshawk, Peregrine, buzzards, kestrel and several Short toed eagles. Near the chapel at Faneromeni a river warbler kept us entertained while dozens of short tailed blue butterflies hunkered down out of wind.

Ballion's Crake and Terrek Sandpiper

Thursday 17 May 2017 Ipsilou Faneromeni

Thursday 17 May 2017
Ipsilou, Sigri & Faneromeni
While at Ipsilou around 11ish it was cool, cloudy and spotting rain.It later turned into another oppressively hot day for birding.
Just a short note on our visit out West today.
While there seemed a fairly decent passage of red backed shrieks, the only other migrating birds of note were two singing icterines and a single singing golden oriole at Faneromeni.
At Ipsilou and Sigi , single Eleonoras did flybys, the rest of the birds we saw were endemics, including 6 lesser kestrels on wires on the hills above Sigri, 4 little owls in the same area and fleeting views of Hawfinch on 3 occasions near Skalachori. Plenty of shrikes and spot fly about at various locations.
Any one expecting to see anything at the Faneromeni lower Ford will be bitterly disappointed as upstream is bone dry and looks as though it's been levelled for driving.
Thanks to Mark for his driving skills and knowledge and Adam for his keen eyes and both for their sense of humour
It's been a blast!
Thank you guys
😎

20 May 2018 Sunday - Rose Coloured Starlings

There have been a number of reports of flocks in on the regular mulberry trees feeding stations at the Tsiknias River and the Lotzaria track, over the past few days.
We checked out the Petra trees over last week and although they were dripping with ripe fruit we dipped. Worth noting that at Petra hundreds of butterflies, mainly large tortoiseshells, were feeding on the windfall fruit which covered the ground underneath.

a couple of reports from am 20/05/18:

Anaxos flock of birds flying over
Skala Kalloni 100+ flying over

Of interest to anyone travelling to Greece this summer:
Tourist Tax 2018

Talk about shooting yourself in the foot ?
A small charge I know but , a bit of a blow if you're not aware of it and you're holidaying with your family.

At the start of 2018 Greece introduced a tourist tax, the first time one had been levied.

You'll be asked to pay the tax when you check in to your accommodation and you can pay it by cash or card.

The cost is €0.50 (44p) per person per day for those in apartments and one to two-star hotels, going up to €1.50 (£1.31) in three-star hotels, €3 (£2.62) in four-star hotels and €4 (£3.49) in five-star hotels.
More info here!
